BRP dealers cannot legally sell this product. Note that this guy is in Croatia. Not much BRP can do about him, eh?
We went thru that same scenario when a competitor got their hands on a bunch of our intellectual property. The lawyers got involved, a couple cease and desist letter where sent, nothing happened. An international intellectual property case can take years and $$$$millions in lawyers fees. The cost would have exceeded the loss.

You got that right! A few years ago I was involved with a reverse engineering issue with a Chinese company. Their reply was that they can do what they want and we should be be flattered that they thought so highly of our engineering.

But we digress....

I would love to have the software to diagnose my SeaDoo, but I won't stoop that low to steal the software from a foreigner. I feel that if I don't support my dealer there won't be a dealer to buy from next time I want a new one!

Re: New 2 strokes versus 4 strokes

This not quite a dead horse yet and I do have some related experience that may or may not be useful.

Back to the original question about clean 2 strokes. Several people stated it is because of Direct Fuel Injections (DFI) and this is true, but I would like to steal a few kilobytes of internet and explain why.

I'm going to assume people know the 2 stroke cycle and how air/fuel mixture moves through the engine. On older EFI 2 strokes, fuel was injected either into the crankcase (along with oil; same place as a typical carbureted 2 stroke) or (possibly) in the transfer area. With DFI, only oil is injected into the crankcase. The fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber AFTER the piston has closed off the intake and exhaust ports. This means that no unburned fuel has a chance of going out the exhaust and is why 2 stroke DFI can meet the current emission standards.

Regarding diagnostics and repair of DFI/EFI outboards versus car.

First BRP added several LED diagnostic light on their ECM several years back. They are simple go/no-go indicators, but it was a breakthrough (IMHO). Pop the hood, key on and the lights will tell you if the basic functionality of the ECM is all there. If they aren't all green, you will know quickly what major system is not working.

Cranking/starting the engine will tell you different information including one of the most difficult things to easily test - functionality of the crankcase speed/position sensor.

I can not emphasize how important these are ! With them you actually have a chance of fixing a no start out in the boonies with a pliers and a screwdriver ! I can only hope that other brands are emulating this functionality.

Second, cars and pickups these days have a huge amount of "extra" hardware and software for diagnosing there system. Every sensor has a direct or indirect way of validating proper functionality. Today, more than 50% of the software is related to monitoring, testing, recording or reporting error conditions in most PCMs.
