i am putting together a boat for my buddy, he has found a new 2002 150 e-tec, i know they are bullet proof now, but what about the older ones, was that the first year? thanks for any info, eric
They were on the right track until they went bankrupt and then the BRP family brought them back, Fichts were high maintainence for example spark plugs had to be changed every 100 hrs, exhaust/baro temp had a tendency to get clogged and had EMM problems. Etec is probably the best choice in my opinion for the bass guys because you can stock up on batteries for trolling motors and accessories. The software is nice and was designed by a former marine mechanic.
Get a model number first. There were no E-TEC 150's in 2002, only the FICHT engines.
Now the 2002 FICHTS were built by Bombardier and were very good motors in their day. The 2001 and earlier FICHTS were built by the former OMC and had a checkered reputation.
It's a 2002 direct injection Ficht with a 25" shaft. As said above, BRP manufactured these and it might not be to bad. I'd still stick with an E-Tec though.
