Its a Okay thanks. Yes, the old motor was 6 BTDC. When I purchased the new engine the tech said the base timing should be set to 1 ATDC. So when my thumb pops off, I should have the rotor pointing at #1 plug in relation to the distributor?

Yes, it will be close enough to drop in. Then when the motor is cranked over it may need a slight turn one way or the other to catch and run

So, I believe I have everything correct. Whenever the cly 1 hits its compression stroke (every 2 rotations of the harmonic balancer) the rotor points to plug #1 in relation to the distributor cap. Here are two pictures... look correct?

On a side note, the green mark on the timing tab came marked at 6 BTDC. I have spoken to the marina (techs) who sold me the motor- multiple times to confirm what the base timing is, they insist on 1 ATDC. What are your thoughts on this?

Yes that looks correct. As before someone needs to crank the motor and someone else needs to turn the dizzy real slow if it does not start right away. Just grab hold and as the engine is cranking over very slowly turn it one way then the other until is starts. Once started get it stable enough at idle then set timing

What are your thoughts on the timing tab? Why would it be marked at 6 BTDC and the techs are telling me 1 ATDC... kind of worried. Maybe I should get it in writing from the marina, in the event it gets destroyed due to improper timing...

The techs are 100% correct, you have EST ignition on your engine so in base timing mode the engine needs to be timed to 1* ATDC. Once out of base timing mode the EST will advance timing to 10-12*. Total timing is around 26-28*. Some 3.0L's with EST were 2* BTDC, some 1* BTDC, others 1* ATDC... 1* ATDC is a safe bet.

I don't have the docs handy (look up in the "adults only section), but in a nut shell you need to jumper the distributor white wires and join the shift interrupt switch wires to put the ignition into base timing mode.

Great. Thank you for the confirmation on the timing. I've been reading a lot on how to set the timing. I made my own wire harness, so I was sure that I spliced in all the correct connectors to bring it in and out of base timing as needed.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out. I dropped it in last night. Got everything connected, except the outdrive- didn't have access to the alignment tool. I bought one though. Since I couldn't start it w/ it in forward gear from the ignition switch... can I just put it back in forward gear before I throw the outdrive back on? Other than that, she seems to run like a top, fires right up. Got it timed, broke in the cam. I had the thermostat housing connected directly to a garden hose to insure proper cooling at 2k rpm.
