New 4HP Yamaha four-stroke starts pretty good when cold (two or three pulls)...but is a real bear when warm (10-15-20 pulls). What's the deal? Yamaha suggests cranking the throttle to about 3/4 when warm, which helps, but still just wants to sputter.

I'm not sure if it's flooded, or if the throttle plate isn't opening properly...but I'll check.

Does anyone else have this problem. Seems like it should start easily when warm! Also, Yamaha seems to know about this problem because of the printed "hard starting to 3/4" instructions printed on the the motor!

What gives?

You have probably tried giving it just a little choke. What was the result.

Yes, I did mess with the choke. But I did not make small adjustments...maybe 1/2 & full choke. Maybe I need to make very small choke adjustments??

I still think the motor should fire right up when warm and shouldn't need to mess with the choke. Agree???

Re: New 4HP Yamaha four-stroke

Well

For example my motor wants one pull with FULL choke and starts on the second pull with 1/2 choke and needs to be left on 1/2 choke if you want to put it in gear before it is fully warmed up

It is on a sailboat so it always tilted out of the water after 5 to 10 minutes of running and generally wants 1/2 choke with about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle to start warm

It took me a while to find the sweet spot ;)
