The only thing I can think of, is under the powerhead, at the crankshaft.

Wow...you're quick! Any idea of what it holds together?

I just looked at the pic of the crank splines. There's a groove in it...is this where the snap ring goes?

No, actually, that grove in the spline is where an o-ring is supposed to go. The snapring I believe is for the lower seal assembly on the powerhead.

BTW, you'll want to make sure that you put an o-ring back on the top end of that driveshaft, so it doesn't rattle around inside the crank and hog out the spline.

Yes, I''ll replace the o-ring too. I wonder where it went?? There was no sign of it!

It looks like I'll need to also to pull the powerhead and replace the snap ring. I saw from a diagram where it goes now! Thanks for your help.

It's a good possibility that someone has had the motor apart before and left it out. If you didn't see it come out with the removal of the lower unit, that would be my bet, which could also explain the broken snap ring. Instead of replacing the broken snap ring, the last person who worked on it, likely re-installed a fualty one, that was destined to break. Luckily, this classic is in your hands now to make things right. :D:D

looks like the lock ring that holds the lower crank seal rings in place.
the carbon ring is held in with a spring and a lock ring,or was.
its a face seal with an oring in it.
powerhead removal is nessasary for replacement.
