Hello everyone!

I just bought my first boat, bought it out of a barn for $140. She is a 1968 or 69 Shell Lake Lasebra 500. Its got some work it needs before I get it in the water and want to get some opinions before I crack into it.

The engine: 1968 Johnson 40 HP Electramatic Model Number: RKL-30 A, serial number: J2975493, I pulled the engine cover off and started it taking a peak, looks like a mouse mad its home inside and started eating some wires. Checked compression 92 in top cylinder and 102 in bottom (good or bad?) See below for images

My questions:
- Where should the fuse box typically go on the wire loom up the the steering wheel, because I can't find it of previous owner?
- How does my engine charge the battery back up, it doesn't appear to have the generator?
- On my carburetor it looks like its missing the the spout to that allows me to clamp the fuel line to any suggestion on that?
- I have looked high and low for a correct wiring diagram for this and haven't found one (waiting for my repair manual to come in the mail) any one know where I can find on on the internet?
- I've read on the forum that you need an electramatic control to make the clutches engage etc OR when that switch breaks you wire up another three way switch for Forward, natural and reverse? Is that possible? I believe thats what the PO did because Found a three way switch on the end of my loom.
-Does my engine have an electric choke?
- What controls should be on my instrument panel, the boat shows cut outs on the dash for and Amp meter, Push button choke and starter.

Alright enough question for the first round!

Thanks for you advice!

David

Typical stuff there.----That one bolt is plugging air intake for hot air choke, novice mistake..---That long tube feeds hot air to the bimettalic spring on the carburetor.---Choke also has an electric solenoid.-------You will need the generator for longer trips.------At this time you should remove the bypass covers to inspect pistons and rings before spending a single $ on this mess.------They were excellent motors but not yours at this time.---The carburetor also has been changed and does not have the fixed high speed jet.-----Someone appeared to be chasing a problem with the motor and then parked it.-------Coils under the flywheel are likely cracked too.

Thanks for the response! I looked up pictures on the bypass covers, but can't place there location on the engine. Can you give me a clue on the location?

Thanks!

Port side of the block.--------2 covers and 6 small screws each.-------About 3" X 3" they are.

It appears the whole carburetor has not been changed because it still has the hot air choke. But the carburetor float bowl has been changed, probably to get an adjustable high speed jet. Not a necessary mod. I guess some people feel they need to twirl knobs.

Theres tons of those motors around still so never fear. When I travelled through Wi a couple of years ago I saw at least a half dozen of those motors on boats for sale on the side of the road between Superior and Michigan, maybe even more.Pretty well every camp friendly lake around here has at least 1 or 2 of them putting around also. And only god knows how many are sitting in garages just waiting for a new home.

Hot Air Choke is one of the several different types of Automatic Chokes used by OMC during the 1060s

AS for the adjustable High Speed Needle, Outboard manufacturers switched to fixed jet metering to remove one more thing for the owner to misadjust and ruin the engine. Adjusting the High Speed Needle for highest RPM sounds great, but it puts the mixture on the fine edge of being too lean. Fixed jetting prevents that.

What do I need to get the carbs back to original?

An entire carb from a post 63 40hp, the method of link-and-sync changed in 1964, so 61-63 carb might not adjust properly. That said you might currently be using a 1960 carb(only year the 40hp had adjustable high speed) or an older 35hp carb, or even a mid 60s 33hp carb. Or your carb is original and had an older fuel bowl swapped to it

Another method would be a fuel bowl from a 1961 or later carb

http://www.boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/...rude.html#/102 Older adjustable carb(pre1960 engines and mid 1960s 33hp), and a water heated choke-1960 -1963 40hp

Scuffing/Scoring of the piston skirt, checking for broken piston rings, Pressing them in with a blade screwdriver, there should be springiness. Careful not to scratch the piston

Would this Carb bowl work? it says it from a 8-25HP engine http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/272417072737?lpid=82&chn=ps&ul_noapp=true

Don't think that will work.-----You need a carburetor bowl that will fit a 40 hp.----Inspect those pistons first before thinking of spending a single $
