Keep buying B'liners and you will continue having headaches.

Get a quality boat that you can afford.

For about that same price (maybe $11K tops), I know of someone selling a very late model 4Winns 17 footer with 4.3L instead of the 4 banger. Look around and consider used late model with few hours in a more premium boat and you will come out ahead. Just a thought. I did this and saved 1/3 off of new. Couldn't be happier.

Re: new bayliner vrs used late model

Obviously I can't speak for JB. Most of the Bayliner owners I have met have been perfectly happy with their Bayliners. Like garycinn my habit has been to buy used boats that are nicer than I could have bought with the same $$ new. Even though you are more likely to get burned with a used boat. But if a nice used boat is tough to find, I can understand springing for the new boat instead. Just depends on your situation at the time.

Kelly Cook

Hi, Bobby.

My boat is a 1980 Boston Whaler Montauk 17 with a Suzuki 2001 DF70 EFI 4 stroke outboard.

No headaches, worth more than I paid for it (less engine price).

Buy quality. In the end it costs you less.

Good luck. :)

Good idea buying a year or two old preowned boat. You can get a lot more boat for the money if you let some other poor slob take the initial depreciation hit.You can also step up to a much better quality boat.Charlie

What does it say about a boat that it shows up on the used market only a couple of years old??

Seems to me that people would keep a great boat and dump a scow.

It says to me, the original owner bought the wrong boat for there needs, got two-footitis sooner than most, or the boat is a POS :D

Cheers... Canuck 16.

JB what you say is a possibility but what I see much more often than that is either someone moving up to a larger boat right away(I can think of 5 friends off the top of my head) or the misfortue of someone that bit off more than they can afford or their finances have changed. After what the stock market did after 9-11 there were many ,many ,many late madel boats for sale.Charlie

bobby515, I just went through what you are going through now. I'm right across the Delaware River in NJ. The used boat market in this area is definitely a sellers market for boats in average to above average condition. I was looking in NJ, PA and DE. I tried to look at or buy used boats in average/above average condition and lost every one. Sellers in this area are getting asking or darn close to asking price for average and above average boats and they do not stay on the market very long. Look outside this area for better deals. There were some good used boat deals in NY if you are willing to drive that far. Here are a couple of examples that did not seem too bad:

NY Boat 1
NY Boat 2

Re: new bayliner vrs used late model

bobby,
Don't let people get you confused by the difference between quality and value. I respect JB and others opinions and knowledge but they may be in a position where budget isn't as important. Value is price divided by quality and requirements. Bayliner makes a good value boat or they wouldn't still be in business. I know several people who can afford anything they want and own Bayliners because for the price it does everything they want and they are very satisfied. These people are businessmen who are succesful because they know the difference between money well spent and money just spent. Only you can decide what you expect for the $$ you have. And don't forget the value of a reputable dealer who will stand behind their sale regardless of make.

Bobby.

I am not suggesting that you go over the budget, just the opposite.

A top quality boat, like a Boston Whaler, Grady White, Scout, Ranger, depending on your use, can be bought for under $10K. At 10 to 20 years these classics are still better boats than many new entry level or bargain boats.

Re: new bayliner vrs used late model

Bayliner and Boston Whaler are now owned by the same parent company. Ooooo, thats gotta hurt.

Stay away from boat #1 above. It is rigged with an older Force motor, that also was built by the parent company of Boston Whaler.

Point is well made by neil2fish. With a reliable engine, care, and maintenance, a good bowrider can be had in that price range, new or used.

Will you be happy with the new one, its size, layout, and engine? I wouldn't. But I would be happy with boat #2 above, as I like that merc outboard. Well, maybe not, cause it isn't a fishing boat. :p

Also, I would rather buy a used made in USA boat, than a new made in Mexico boat. In 2003, Bayliner moved production of the 175 to Mexico, and from what I read, the boat was cheapened up, in order to get that $9999 price. ( in 2002, the 175 price was $13,000).

And finally, make sure you are comparing bottom line prices, as most dealers will be charging you a freight charge, and a rigging/prep charge, on a new boat.
