Re: new bayliner vrs used late model

roscoe is right. Stay away from "NY Boat 1". I didn't realize it had a Force OB. A friend of mine had a Force OB, nothing but problems.

A Bayliner factory rep I talked too at a boat show this year confirmed that the Bayliner 175 and 185 are made in Mexico.

My local dealer also said a low end Maxum and Sea Ray model are also made in Mexico. I can't confirm or deny his statement.

Yeesh, ignoramaces!!

I just love these ignorant comments "Bayliner=problems"... why don't you try doing some research on the web...?

Many reviewers out there boast how good the new Bayliners (2001+) are built!

Re: new bayliner vrs used late model

Here we go again JB, bashing the Bayliner owners.I,ve had my 175 capri 135hp for almost 6 years.I,ve had bother at the end of every season. To start with I have to change drive and engine oil, plugs etc, etc, etc.God i,m sick of these Mercruiser engines  But then again, most of these other so called better boats have the same i/o set up. So what is Bayliner doing wrong, are they putting in a cheeper merc set up.Is there such a thing? DON,T THINK SO.Stop the bashing now.You buy the boat that you like and to H*** with what others think.

The bottom line is no other entry level boat even compares to the Bayliner 175 for features, quality, looks and value. I know, because I have been shopping for one for 6 months. The other boat manufacturers tell you that their boat for 5k more is a step up from the Bayliner, but when you press them all they tell you about is the tilt steering and curved glass. Well for 5k, you can keep your curved glass!!

A top quality boat, like a Boston Whaler, Grady White, Scout, Ranger, depending on your use, can be bought for under $10K. At 10 to 20 years these classics are still better boats than many new entry level or bargain boats.
I have to point out that the boats that JB is recommending are like comparing apples to oranges. None of them are bowrider style 'pleasure boats' like the Bayliner he is looking at. I doubt you can find a 10-20 year old Cobalt, Crownline, or Mariah that is less than 10 grand that would be in good enough shape and be suitable for a new boater that doesn't want, need, or afford the headaches of finding, inspecting, and maintaining an older rig.

I also disaggree with the notion that a late model boat is on the market again soley because of quality issues. Most are sold because they were bought as impulse items that weren't worth the monthly payment for how little they got used, or bought without knowing what type of boat was really wanted or needed. My $.02.

i would always buy a late model used boat instead of a new one, cause it not gonna be new very long, but you will have a new finance payment for a long time. listen to this 1, i recently bought a bank repossession bass tracker pro-18, it was just what i wanted to fish on the small lakes around here where i live. it is a 1994 model and it had sat and never been cleaned at all, to say it was filthy would be an under statement. ive cleaned on it for bout 3 months and now it looks like it has never been in the water at all, it looks like new. but, i only gave 2500 dollars for it instead of buying a new one like it for 12500 dollars. see what i mean.

Re: new bayliner vrs used late model

We have a Bayliner...there, I said it, now it is out in the open for everyone to look down on me. We bought a 2001 215 Capri in 2003 as a dealer holdover. Paid the same price for our new boat with a one year warranty as we could find in our area for the same used boat.

The boat has had absolutely no problems thus far. We are both teachers so our summers are open and we had the boat out just about every other day all last summer. Our 21' bayrider has a 220 hp V8 that can move us and everything that we take with us to 50 mph.

We found a lot of information on forums like this and from friends that we know are avid boaters and most have said that Bayliners are entry level boats. Not BAD boats, just entry level. Yes, we looked at the Sea Ray boat that was 2 foot shorter, a 4.3 L instead of a 5.0 L V8 and was missing a few other things for $6K MORE. We looked at it this way, we kept $150 a MONTH for the 4 years that we financed it to put away for a down payment on our next boat. In the end we will have $6k+ in the bank and a paid off boat to sell for more money for a down payment on the next boat.

Yes, other boat bring more money when you sell them, but most of that is due to the fact that other boats COST more when you bought them. I have seen someone run the numbers for used boats after 3, 5, and 10 years and Bayliners hold their value just as well as others (better than some).

You choose what you want to do. Both choices have merit. Buy a new entry level boat and you do get a warranty to fix things that aren't working right. Save the money on a used boat and you are taking a chance that you will have to front the money for things that are broken or that break soon after you get it. Just remember, if you buy the used boat, save some of your money to make repairs. I have seen too many people have a price in mind, buy used and then when something breaks and the boat mechanic wants $70 per hour to fix it, the boat sits there from lack of funds....

Re: new bayliner vrs used late model

Its refreshing hearing a logical perspective. I agree with buying new over used, mostly because then you know exactly what has been done to the boat. This is especially true for new boaters who know nothing about boats... warranty is crucial for them!

I wish someone could define "entry level" to me. Entry level must mean price point, because the Bayliners I have seen have more features and just as good finish quality, and are cheaper than the others. You listed a great example of this.. a Sea Ray, 2 ft. shorter, less engine, and yet, despite less features, was 6k MORE!! What are you paying the 6k for?!!? The NAME?? LOL.

I have done extensive research on the web, and I have yet to find a bad review for a Bayliner that would substantiate some of these claims that they are "cheaper". I think the hard reality is that Bayliner has streamlined their manufacturing process to a point where they can still make their margins and charge much less than their competitors. Yes, you can put together a boat for cheaper with just as good Quality Control in Mexico. Cadillac has been doing it on their Escalades for years!

Sounds like a great find! I'll bet you have so much fun, you'll keep it an extra year! I'll keep an eye out for you on the Delaware river this summer. Keep an eye out for me, I'm in a Bayliner 205.

bobby515,

Are you talkin about the island by the airport? If so, I have been there often. I use the marinas there by the Darby Creek to pick up fuel on my way to Cap May. That area of the river can get pretty rough. Generally speaking, the Delaware river can get pretty rough south of the Betsy Ross bridge. If you want smoother water, then head north past the Tacony-Palmyra bridge.
