Hello all like I said I am new to having a boat with an outboard, I share the boat with a friend and we just bought it today. Its a 2004 Tracker Pro16 with a "Tracker" (Mercury?) 60 ELPTO on it ('04) as well, it is oil fed (2 Stroke) and starts up with no problem. However theres no pee stream coming out of it, some smoke comes out as it is a 2 stroke but no water. I was hoping that it was just because the muffs had horrible contact so we dropped in the river and boom.......no pee stream. He said that he was going to replace the water pump at the end of this season because he had not replaced it in 2 years (from what I have learned every other year as PM is a good rule of thumb.) The person that we bought it off of claims that it was working fine 3 days ago (believe him) as the boat is in amazing condition.

So here are the questions that I have:

I read a few threads that state when you replace the water pump do the thermostats as well.....good idea?

Is this the correct water pump kit? Everything I have read only mentions a 60ELPTO 4 Stroke.
http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/mm5/apps...RCASE COMPONENTS&MODEL=2&IMAGE=99&ITEM_ID=101

Both of these items appear to be extremely easy to replace and the water pump seems to go better during install with 2 people but other wise can be done alone.

Is there anything else that would cause the water to not "pee" out of the top and does that "pee" stream have a technical term or is that the technical term?

As far as the thermostat Part # 18-3549 from this site would be the correct one as well?

I will admit that I didn't really look up much on this, but there was no bank charger on the boat and we are looking to put one in, is it a hard install and is this one ok?

And my last question is that you please take it easy on me, I am a newbie at this and I am doing my best, I just want to make sure that I am not only doing the right thing but purchasing the right items as well.

Also please and thank you!

Might have something blocking the outlet hole. Mud daubers like to plug up my motor.

First things first ford84. :welcome: to iboats. Great to have you aboard...

The water out let is some times referred to as the Tale Tell. or Pee Tell. I don't know of any official name. But seems everybody knows what you're talking about. As 64osby stated above, check for dirt dabbers in the outlet. They love to build in those size openings. And not knowing enough about your engine, maybe the thermostat controls the output stream. So maybe it has to heat up before the thermostat opens. Either way, when you change the water pump impellor, verify everything is clear and open before reassembling the engine again. You shouldn't have any issues then. JMHO!

Here is a link to your motor and all parts you may need
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectDocs.asp?doc_nbr=803022

Your OEM water complete pump kit can be one of 2 different ones, for 46-812966A11 used for 1.64 ratio drive
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...sc=Gear+Housing,+Driveshaft+1.64:1+Gear+Ratio

or 46-43024A7 used on 2.33 ratio drive
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...,+Driveshaft+2.33:1+0T622485/+0P222545+and+Up

There are just water pump kits which contain impeller, gaskets and wear plate for less. Just need to verify which motor you have

Thermostat is 850055001
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...1&bnbr=150&bdesc=Cylinder+Block+and+Crankcase

maybe Fun Times can verify which one you have

As far as the bank charger, your link didn't work. The site you choose is a competitor to iboats and we try to lead folks here for letting us have this forum. How many banks of batteries do you have?

How do I find out what the gear ratio is????

Right now theres the ignition battery and a deep cycle for the bow troller...looking to add a second deep cycle for the bow troller on a selector master switch since its only a 12v troller.

I would like to be able to find an exploded engine view or a manual for the outboard

?

The first link I posted is your breakdown and exploded view with part numbers. Just select one of them and you get the brake down something like this

I send a message to Fun Times hoping he will come and advise on the ratio. He has the ability to look things up that we don't. I'm sure there are others, maybe they can help

If you need more run time add one additional deep cycle battery and connect in parallel. Then you still just need what you have a one 2-bank charger

AllDodge Yes I actually seen that after I replied and said that haha my printer has been going non-stop since. I currently don't have a bank charger at all on the boat and was looking to add one. We will be looking for more run time as theres a lot of lakes around us that are electric only and theres a few unrestricted with some rivers as well. Theres days where we will get out on the electric lakes (best musky fishing in the area is on an electric only lake). Sorry to be a pain.

Sometimes there is a sticker found with the gear ratio right near or on top of the aft end (rear) lower unit gear housing's anti-ventilation plate such as you can barely see in the first two photos in the following link, http://www.ebay.com/itm/2003-Mercur...20-40-60-75-/321982537661?hash=item4af7a79fbd

I can't tell from the serial number what the gear ratio is but the service manual does indicate the 50/55/60 HP's uses a 1:64.1 ratio plus looking over what the two part numbers "fit", it seems to indicate you'll need the full water pump kit from the Gear Housing, Driveshaft 1.64:1 Gear Ratio which is 46-812966A11 (or possibly A12 now) as it says it fits engine modes,

Well guys I found the reason why the tell tale is not showing itself.....I brave the cold and 30mph wind gust...the local shop was amazing to help while the other one well.......yeah. So pics to follow!

Everything looks fine so far!

The turbo model maybe? (The guy selling the boat had the hose for the muffs hooked up to his hot water heater, the water coming out was too hot to touch)

Theres actually burrs on the inside of the housing!

Doesn't look like this has been done in a while, or has been and just not cleaned up at all!

All cleaned up and awaiting the new parts to come in!

The local shop I went to order the new parts and beat any price I could find online. The refused to order parts until I brought them the old parts just so they could confirm the right parts were being ordered due to a No Returns on Parts policy!

Since everything in the water pump area that was supposed to be as clean as the rest of the boat looked horrible, I also decided to get a new thermostat and seals for that right away too. This way I know its new and all is good!

Thanks for all the help! I am sure there will be more post soon in other threads! Especially since the boat has a anchor winch and I would like to add a remote switch in the console for it, and I would like to put a new "fish finder/chartplotter" on the console!

That happens when people start them out of the water. You see people do it on the launch ramp before they put it in the water to see if it starts. That rubber impeller riding in that metal housing melts right away. In other words if it's not wet then don't try and start it. Ever.

When you have the t.stat cover removed, I would flush it from the top. Bits and pieces from the old impeller find their way into water passages. You might end up pulling the cylinder head and going after the stuff, but I would try flushing it and then see how it runs when it's back together (check temp.). JMO.

pretty straightforward. While the l.u. is off and the t.stat cover removed, use a hose at low pressure to flush from the powerhead. You might use the male end of a quick disconnect, for example, for a fit up there -- but doesn't have to be tight. If it were mine, I would flush up from the bottom as well, maybe using a piece of fuel hose or something similar to get some water up from the bottom. I have a number of "specialized" tubes and hoses that I use when working on one of my motors. It's particularly useful for salt water motors, although from your pic I'm guessing that might not be you. Flushing might be a spring project.

So basically take the thermostat out, shove some type of a fitting in the hole, turn the hose on, and let it flush out for 10 mins or so?
