I need some help trying to figure out an issue i have with a new carb, coil, distributor fuel pump and wiring that was done on my boat. TBI gutted and a new carb, dizzi, coil, fuel pump and wiring installed. The boat started perfectly after timing bu the mechanic. Engine was left running for about 20 minutes and not even a cough. Today i had starting issues in the morning in my driveway before heading to the water but it started after a couple of cranks. Once at the dock i turned it on and it started right up. Left the boat at the dock while i went to park the truck and when i returned by brother told me that it had turned off by itself. Long story short, tried to star but no dice. It would crank and sometimes attempt to start but it would die. Had to take it back home and tried starting it and when it did start it would shake like if it was possessed then it would die. I didnt want to keep at it and give it time to cool off. I checked the pump and it was pumping but i dont know what could be causing the issue. Started and ran fine and all the sudden died at the dock. Any ideas?

With the engine running what is the voltage at the + or bat side of the coil?
How much fuel pressure is at the carburetor?

Did you add an oil pressure switch in line with the fuel pump? If the wiring for this isn't done correctly you can have intermittent fuel pump cut out problems.
Is the carb new or reman?
Did you replace the fuel filter?
A bit of grit in the fuel inlet could cause this.

Carb is new Edelbrock 1406, unsure of the fuel pressure but the pump is a new carter p4070. For now it has a inline fuel filter car type. Looking to install fuel water separator. The mechanic installed the pump directly to switch (temporary) while he gets the oil switch. He stated he would return this week to install. Engine starts momenteraly with starter fluid but dies soon after.

Do you think that there is a restriction between the fuel pump and the suction tube in the tank? Were you having a fuel starvation problem before removing the fuel injection?

Plenty of fuel to carb visibly, not tested the right way. I disconected hose at carb and tested to see if possible restriction but plenty of fuel seen. But so far it is leading me to think some sort of debris in carb

sounds to me like the needle and seat in the carb my be stuck open and flooding the motor.
look down the carb for sign of excess fuel dripping when idle..

starting with starter fluid then dying would be indicative of fuel supply issue. Would have him do his work with the oil pressure switch then test for fuel supply when cranking.

1the eddy 1406 is not a marine rated carb, using an automotive carb in a marine application can create fire and explosion issues. Should be using the edlebrock 1409 which is marine rated
