Ok new issue. I got the hole plugged no issues there. Turned the motor over again and was a little dark outside. Noticed that I was getting some pretty good sparking off the top of the coil. Do any of you have a wiring diagram that shows color wires for the coil?

Please explain “sparking” more. Ie, were you seeing lightning like sprigs of sparking fm the tower of the coil? Was the high tension lead from the coil to the distributor connected or was it naked like in your picture. Or you were seeing heating up and short like sparking coming from the coil’s wiring?

Coil lead was removed. Enough spark I could see it from the console while turning the key

Ok so that is normal. While cranking the engine the coil will “fire” (spark) by design. Without the high-tension wire to the distributor that spark has to go somewhere so its going everywhere. Continued doing this will start to break down the insulating properties of the coil casing.

If you desire to turn over the engine but not have it start, then best to disable to coil by pulling off the positive wires. An alternative is to have the high-tension lead in the coil but grounded out to the engine block buy stuffing it somewhere. This is less desired as it can come loose and if playing with fuel can cause it to ignite. Best to pull the + wires off coil or a fuse or relay so it has no power whatsoever.

Did that answer your concern? Thanks.

I made up a jumper wire with alligator clips so I can ground the coil lead when cranking and you don’t want sparks like for a compression test

Yeah that’s what happens when the spark coming off the coil has no where to go. That’s actually a good sign younhave a nice hot spark
