😮 I Didnt realize That it was a left hand motor. Now wouldn’t change the TDC right?
Lets hope they sent me a LH motor🤔

Guess I’ll pull the harmonic balancer pulley off and out some stud in there. Any idea what size studs I would need? Then I could just use a bar between the 2-3 stud

A left hand motor is whats needed for a I/O application.,Facing the front of the motor the pulley will turn clockwise.
If you can put a hose into #1 sparkplug hole and hit the starter you will feel a rush of air, this is the compression stroke. Now turn the motor over slowly until the timing mark is at the tab notch or the 0.
Now drop in the dist as specified in the previous posts

So the crank bolt will tighten. Just odd it stopped spinning the motor
I had been using the crank bolt to turn it for the last week but not now.

When I tried to use my alligator clamps with wire leads on them to the starter last night the starter just rolled over and wouldn’t engage to the fly wheel

If you tried connecting the 2 large posts, that would be correct. All your doing is energizing the starters motor. You need to connect the battery post to the small post closest to the block. This acitvates the solenoid. Much easier to use the slave solenoid though

Not having much luck guys it about run but doesn’t still have intermittent spark. The timing is damn close but still won’t run. Had the ignition control module checked on another 305 and that works fine.

how would I know if it was the ECM? 😩

Only thing that is different on this motor from the old is the crank sensor because that came on the long block

Wondering if the reluctor ring. wheel is the wrong one, or installed incorrectly
Where did the long block come from?

Oh crud, I bought one from them years ago and it was junk, had to rebuild the motor my self. May not be your issue but your motor should fire right up. Might miss a bit at most but should fire.

I would like to see the reluctor ring on the motor, bit maybe before that, put your old crank sensor in the motor

Yes I’m changing the crank sensor tomorrow. Is the reluctor ring internal or external?
i would hope the engine was done right!

Ok I see it now. John at marine engines said it should have 4 rings on it?

should I pull timing cover to double check or scope it?

Remove the sensor and bump the motor around slowly so you can count the lobes

Now I haven’t removed the sensor yet but will be doing later its way down in there.

anyway today I turned it over and watched the rpm gauge and it moves but it is all over the place it just about dimes all the way back around and just bounces all over. Wonder why?

Moving all over the place is either from a bad gauge, sensor, reluctor or a mix of incorrect parts. The tach should show about 300 rpm during cranking

The only parta that are not from the original boat is the internals of the motor and the reluctor ring and crank sensor

do you think it’s time I take it to an expert?
