I installed new Merc exhaust flapper today, I had to drill out one side bracket and rivit it back in the exhaust tube to install it which is all good. My ? is that the rubber kinda hits on the corners of the brackets and dont seem to be able to totally close up the tube, is this normal so basicly it just acts as a baffle? Seems you'd have to have quite abit of back water pressure to get it to totally close. Is this the design? thanks

Re: New exhaust flapper

that's what is, a baffle. If it swings free, it is working.
But, don't come to a sudden stop, and turn the engine off, let it idle for 2 minutes. and if you have following seas, leave it running.
It ain't perfect, and wasn't designed to be.

HA! HA! Bondo:p, I was gonna trim the corners so it closses tighter but i thought i'd run it through here on iboats and see if thats the way they made it and if i had the right part. Top me it's only closing like 3/4 of the opening, I guess if there's enough back pressure it may force it shut. OK, I'm gonna leave it like it is, If my engine sucks water then i'll be anal! HAHAHA!:D thanks guys!
