SO this i what I have done
I replaces my gimbal ring, bellows and gimbal bearing.


When I go out now have a very subtle growl when I turn hard to port. Only when it is all the way over and only to port. I aligned the Gimbal bearing with a merc alignment tool. It is far enough in as per the manual. The u joints look great with no slop.

What would cause this growl?
Can you over grease the bearing? would that cause it?

Any help would be appreciated....

Also because I know don is going to say something. The gimbal bearing used was a merc part and was new. I did not use an aftermarket

Assuming the bearing is good and is installed correctly, I would suspect the u-joints. From what I understand you really cannot tell from looking at them if they are bad or not. If the growl is bad enough to be noticeable, then I would suggest changing the u-joints.

There was no grolw like this before I took it apart. So i would suspect it is soemthing that i did when I replaced the gimbal bearing. The u joints made no noise before. So, there is no way to check them without disasembly

Ayuh,.... You didn't Hear it because of the Other Issues,....

Once you pull the U-joints,+ inspect under the Caps,.... You'll see the ridges on the crosses....

As Bondo points out, I too suspect you will see ridges inside the caps. But regardless, there will be no checking - only replacing. The act of "dis-assembly and inspecting" will destroy them anyway. They aren't expensive, go ahead and put new ones on and see if the problem goes away. If not... well, at least you have new u-joints.

any specific part number? It looks like they are pretty universal. And I will pull the drive after this weekend and change them. Might as well as you guys said.

Just a question. If one is going to replace the Gimbal Bearing shouldn't they just replace the U Joints while they have it all tore apart and then both are new? I'm not trying to be a smart *** I was just thinking mine will have to be changed in a couple years. Mine is not noisy just getting a little play/ slack in the outdrive.

Got it thanks every one. Are these just like autos as far as changing them? I will looking the manual when I get home and do them of course but if they are like autos should be easy.

Whether or not to change them "just because" is up for debate. I personally would not change them unless I had a reason to suspect they were bad.

You had to pull the whole drive ?

If yes did, you use a alignment bar when you reinstalled the drive ?

And to the question of u-joints, they are not expensive, and NAPA, Autozone will have them.

Inspect first, and take them with you, if you need to buy new ones.

Many of us pull the drive, atleast once a year,...
So,..
It's All Torn Apart pretty regularly...
If 8 nuts,+ a $6. gasket set should be called All Torn Apart...

I had the same issue, noise and a bad gimbel bearing. Changed the bearing, aligned it and put it back together. Noise was better but still had some in hard turns. U joints looked and fealt great, changed them anyway. Noise gone. It's a cheap place to start looking and I bet that's your problem.

Personally, if it only growls at hard over turn to the left, I wouldn't worry about them. I've seen new ones do the same exact thing. You might check it at different trim levels also, will probably change the noise. Not saying the ujoints are good or bad, just stating what I have found in the past. Why did you change the gimbal bearing? Did you have water in the bellows, if so, then you should have changed the ujoints too, at the same time.
