Ok started the repair and it went pretty smoothly, the only issue u ran into was the lower swivel pin being so pitted and rusty it wouldn't budge using a punch and hammer, so i ran to my mechanic friend and borrowed his impact chisel which hammered it out in about 5 seconds. Then i drilled the access plug holes and ran into a ton of grease which i used wd 40 foaming tool degreaser along with a brush and compressed air to clean the cavity. I found i was important to stop periodically and degrease everything including my hands and tools to make the job a little quicker and cleaner. Some things that would have made the job easier is installing the trim senders before installing the ring and making sure the person helping you knows howto orient the steering arm.

When I did mine I saved the cutouts and JB welded them them back in rather than using the plugs. Sanded smooth, painted and you can't even tell. Just need to back the hole with some thin aluminum so you have something to glue to. Have some pix somewhere if interested.

Thats a great idea i just couldn't figure out what to use as backing, now that you said that i bet pop can metal would work to help hold the jb weld in place.

Does anyone know the trim cut off setting length for the trim cylinders on the r drive and the water inlet hose length; i got the quicksilver kit but i wanted to double check it to be safe i dont want any kinks in the hose to cause a over heating problem. oh and i went to the adult only section to check out my drives service book but i didn't specify.

This is how I did mine: I used flashing, made a little handle with the screw, and used JB Kwik to hold the backing, then filled in with JB Weld, covered with waxed paper and tape to hold it (the epoxy) in place, then just sanded and painted. Have to make sure the inside is pretty well degreased so the backing holds. Mine has been holding up fine since 2009.

max trim limit length is 21 3/4" between centers, i usually shoot for 21" - helps save the u-joints

just trim about 5/8" off one end of the water hose, a little heat on the hose end and power tune on the transom barb helps in installation
