I got a new ETREX Garmin 12 Channel GPS system for Christmas. You know the yellow one I am talking about. I used it on a car trip since the boat is in winter storage right now. I am hoping it does better on the water then on the road. I still haven't figured everything out on it yet. Does anyone have one of these and how is it working for you?

Re: New GPS system

What kind of problem did it give you on the road? I have the etrex vista and it works flawlessly no matter where I am, as long as it can see the sky. When you're using a handheld in a vehicle, it needs to see as much of the sky as possible. I have a dash mount for mine and it works great. I reads through glass but not metal.

It's not that it doesn't work. I just need to read the directions more. I guess I might be expecting a little to much from this model.

Re: New GPS system

A have talked to lots of people since I got my gps. I thought it was not working properly. I personally, and others, have said they have troubles. We narrowed it down to all the "international" icons that are used for the labels on the buttons. It seems some of us have a hard time with icons. It can be a real pain in the butt, and each icon/button does something different depending what mode you are in,

I even ordered the dvd training video, but that jumps around and is hard to follow. And ofcourse you are in the house watching the dvd, and not outside where you can use the gps while they are explaining it. It helped, but not much.

My brain needs a sequence of steps to follow.
And a diagram on how to get back to where I was, if I push the wrong button, which I do often, cause those icons mean nothing to me.
Once I get that mental diagram worked out in my head, I'm ok.

I know I'm not the only one, but that doesn't make it any easieer.
I see people push the wrong button all the time, then they have to push 12 more buttons to get back to where thay were, then try again. What would be the problem with putting one more button on those things, a "back" button? And put some dang labels on them.

Anybody want to buy a used gps? :(

Re: New GPS system

BPG,
I've got one also, and I've found it works for me better in the boat than in the car.

Reason seems to be that in the boat all I need is a couple of fixed pieces of info, and once I've got the hang of setting these on the screen, and wedging the Etrex tight on the console, it just performs.

In the car I wedge it tight up to the screen/dash junction. It never moves because it's got the rubber surround, but I can't read it well from the drivers seat and have to keep squinting. It's also hard to read in bright sun.

I like it, but it's limited compared with a bigger-screen colour unit, and the instructions are written in Greek by a blind Japanese octagonarian.

I have a Magellan Gold which I use in my car, connected to my laptop which has a 12 volt adapter. I use Microsoft Streets and Trips with it and always know exactly where I am. I love it!

Re: New GPS system

I have the exact same unit that you're describing, and have used it on foot, in the car and in the boat with great success. I bought it used from a guy I know, and got a really good deal on it. I think it's great for what it is..which is a tool to point you in a direction...What it is NOT is a courseplotter or chartplotter.

The lack of map support really limits what you can use it for, but you CAN always use it to find your way home or to some preset waypoint.

I found that mine became MUCH more useful when I combined it with my laptop running mapsource software. Using the laptop and software, I'm able to plot a course in detail, then I can plug the gps into the laptop and send the course and waypoints to the gps. This makes the unit a lot more useable, since the mapsource software puts everything in the right place in the gps and frees me up from having to read the directions.

When you combine the two tools together you get all the functionality (and more) of a much more expensive gps unit..of course, if you don't already have the laptop, it's probably not a very economical solution. :)

Anyway...yes, even without the laptop, I've used it on the water with great success, so long as I only needed it to point me in the right direction.

Hope this helps!

Re: New GPS system

davaugust,
That is very very helpful. I have been using it and reading the book for the last couple of days and already it has become easier. I would like to know about hooking it to your laptop and using mapsource. How did you figure out how to do this? Is mapsource compatible with the GPS system? Are there directions somewhere maybe with mapsource on how to do this? I need info info info. Sounds like you are at the point I am trying to reacy. Thanks for any help you can give. :D

Re: New GPS system

I'm not sure where you are with computers, so forgive me if I get a little basic in the description of what to do :)

OK, your eTrex probably came with the necessary connection cable for a laptop..it'll plug (actually slides) into the bottom of the gps on one end and the other end is a serial fitting for a computer. (Serial looks a litte like a video cable for a monitor, with fewer pins in it). That's pretty much it...you don't need special drivers or anything to make it work..that's kind of the beauty of a serial interface.

OK, assuming this is done..moving over to mapsource. I found it very intuitive to get it to work. Mapsource IS compatible with GPS (at least the version I have is?). I don't have my laptop handy here at the office, so I can't look up the exact options...but one of the menu sub-items is "send to gps"...

Once you've plotted a course in the mapsource software..you can "send to gps"..it'll be stored as a trail on your gps that you can access...then use the simple nav functions in the gps to take you through the waypoints one at a time.

You can also retrieve waypoints from the gps, which is handy if you mark a good fishing spot with the gps while on the water...you can store it in your computer too.

Only real downside is that the mapsource cds are a little bit expensive. I was lucky, the guy I bought my gps from through in the "coastal waterways" mapsource cd for free. :)

Anyway, It's very intuitive, I really don't think you'll have a problem getting it to go...if you do, feel free to ask anything specific that comes up and I'll be glad to answer as well as I can.

-d
Thanks for the info. Your explanation was dead on. I am somewhat computer savy but I have this problem that I need things spelled out for me when it comes to new projects. Thanks! When I do get the mapsource I will let you know how things worked.
:D

Re: New GPS system

Great! I look forward to it.

FYI - out of curiosity I just searched "mapsource" on ebay...there are quite a few (>100) pretty good deals on the software. :)

Re: New GPS system

Garmin has the latest Mapsource upgrades available as free downloads on their web site. Mapsource comes with all of their mapping CDs. It is the application that allows the tranfer of mapping data and GPS signals between PC and GPS.
Garmin Mapsource Updates

Also be sure and check for your GPS unit upgrades in this same location.

Once you connect your GPS to your laptop and turn it on, open Mapsource. On the left hand side, there are the tabs for; Maps, Waypoints, Routes, Tracks and GPS. Click on the GPS tab and then click the "Start Tracking" button. Your GPS will provide the location data to your laptop and you will see the icon tracking on the map at your current location.

You'll get the hang of it after you play with it for a while. I've had mine for 3 years and I still learn new ways to use it!

Re: New GPS system

One other thing you might be interested in is the fact that your PC and your GPS can also be used for a chartplotter with the right software. Best to go to a place that sells the software and see which brand suits your needs. Some stuff is pretty antiquated and usually it is true 'you get what you pay for'. But, I used one with the PC for mapping on a trip with a motor home clear back in 1998 and it was great. The large color screen is really nice. I have found since then that it was cheaper to upgrade to the Uniden Mystic which has a chartplotter built in, but again cost is about 399 and if you add Nav software it is another 100 bucks. But was cheaper than upgrading software and a new laptop. I have since moved on up to the full color Radar/Chartplotter but use the Mystic for nav backup. Has gotten me through a few bad foggy days off the coast here in Oregon. So, don't give up on the GPS, just add some tools that will make using it probably more in line with your thoughts of what a GPS would be able to tell you.
