Hi all,

Never thought about joining a forum dedicated to boating.. so I thought I'd Google around and this is where I was led to. I'm a part of plenty of other forums, why not add another one to the list.. and one that will do me good!

I'm actually a student at MMI of UTI here in Orlando for the Marine Mechanics program. Im about 60% through with my training here and i'm about 110% sure this is what I'd like to do as a career.

Im doing extremely well in the course, better than expected, seeing as how I have no experience with boating, outboard/inboard/stern drive motors. Except for about 3 years of auto-tech in high school, I was basically clueless. Thats right.. no experience. Before coming to the school, I'd been on a boat for about 20 minutes in my entire life. Since schools started, I've met a few other guys in school who've had boats and have been able to take me out and show me what its really like to go boating.

So anyway.. thats my intro. Ill be following along on the boards as often as possible and helping out as much as I can in the technical part of the forum. Im sure I could definately learn a bit more on top of the training I'm getting at school.

See you all around, thanks for reading!

I'm also new around here but an old hand at BBS's and forums. After doing hours of research on my new boat I figured out that this forum and THT seem to be just about the busiest on the net. More posts equals more information. I won't waste my time on any forum that gets less than 100 new posts a day. This place seems pretty solid so far.

If you've been around forums I'm sure you know that you have to take everything on one with a grain of salt. For every 100 people that love a motor or product 3 will post about it while out of another 100 that hate it 99 will state that too. Also, the more a manufacturer sells, the more problem's that will be in the field as well which leads to more negative posts. Sometimes it's hard to sort the good from the bad, but in the end they're all opinions and that's what we're here for anyway.

I'll probably be around here for a while as this seems like a pretty well run forum.

Welcome! It is nice to see a student who is learning the trade in here. You will see a lot of tips here, and you will also see things that will make you shake your head.

So just what are they teaching you over there in Mickey land? I was thinking of putting myself through that school. I retired after 22 years of working on B-52s for the military, I am thinking of getting out of aviation and get into the marine industry. There is a huge market here in Florida for it. I have some education benefits coming through the VA that will pay for it, so why not use it?

Best of luck with your training. UTI is a great school and they produce quality technicians.

Welcome aboard!

Might I also suggest that you get take a good boating course such as offered by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxillary or the U.S. Power Squadron. They should be easy to find there in Florida.

The courses will give you much needed information on the actual operation of boats and make you far more valuable to potential clients and employers. Part of the information might even come in handy some day just to make it home in a crippled boat.

Good luck on your choice of carreer. The field is wide open for knowledgeable, honest mechanics and technicians.

Im actually learning a very decent amount. We just got through our "midway" point if you want to call it that. We've gone through all the basics including theory, rigging, lower units, power heads and diagnostics, electical and carbs/efi and advanced diagnostics. In that order..

Now we're entering into stern drives which is amazing. Its totally worth it, I think. Before, we've heard of things being run a little bit different at the school, but in the past year and a half, things have been turned around and people arent just passing the school, theyre actually leaving as techs.

The school is very strict in terms of professionalism and the cirriculum. They really know how to pick your brains and give you plenty of real life problems that you'd expect in the real world on a variety of engines and manufactures. After stern drive ill be going into an even more advanced diagnostic elective course for each manufacture specifically.. that is.. 6 weeks of yamaha, suzuki, mercury/mercruiser, honda, volvo penta, and OMC/Johnson Evinrude.. and a Personal Watercraft course for 6 weeks as well.

Its really a great program. Im excited about it. Ill see you all on the board, ill be here to learn more.. theres nothing better than more training ecspecially in this feild it seems like.
