I have to replace the starter on my 1986 90hp inline six O/B. I have seen a few starters on ebay that look similar. Does anyone know what range of starters will fit? What do I need to look for? Serial No's? # of Teeth on the gear?
All those with knowledge please help.

Thanks
Andy.

Hi, Andy.

Forgive me if I am overly suspicious. Are you replacing the starter to find out if it will fix a problem or have you proved the starter bad?

Re: New Guy Needs Starter Help

Everything was working fine, then one day there was not enought juice to make the the starter sprocket jump into place. At first I thought it was just a low battery. I even drove my truck 3/4 onto the dock to jump start it! but the same thing. I checked the grounds and they seemed fine. It could be the solonoid, but it sounds like it is working. I removed the starter and jumped to a fresh battery, it turns but I don't think it's fast enough. Besides, the teeth on the gear are so worn that I find it easy to believe that the starter is old enough to just give up. Do you think there is anything else I should check?

Marine Doc - did that part get used on different motors? Are they plentiful, or am I looking for a needle in a haystack?

Andy

PS Starters on ebay are $15. The look the same but I can't tell from the ebay photos. I have asked the sellers for more details.

Starter on ebay #1

Starter on Ebay #2

Your starter was used right up to the V175 block, but not the 200hp

TMD

Hi, Andy.

I am still afraid that you are about to waste your money.

Please go to the FAQ section and do the electric starter troubleshooting tests before you cough up hundreds of bux on a replacement that may not be needed.

Good luck. :)

That Mercury starter is bullet proof unless it went swimming. All you need is a brush pack. You take it apart and clean it with brake clean and install a new brush pack. It might take 30 minutes. A brush pack is 20 dollars List price and a can of brake clean. Total parts 23.50 Us that is.
