First off thanks for all the great info! I'm no mechanic but love to try to do things on my own.

After about 5 years of sitting in the back yard, I've decided to get the boat up and running. Tonite I tried running the outboard muffs first and then in a tub. The motor started and ran just fine, I was amazed. Water was coming out the bottom but not the top 2 ports. I'm taking the I need to change the entire water pump kit. I've ordered my manuel from this site. Any reference to where to get the parts so I get the correct ones?? Model 1258f6b Serial 1284 Force 125. From the info I found it's an 1986. Thanks!

The 2 holes or a single hole in the housing.
It's really not for exhaust at an idle.
It's an excessive water relief port.
If the pressure relief system is working?
When under power past an idle.
Your motor pushes way more water than it can use.
When it gets going and the pumps a pumping the excess water is supposed to open and the ports let the water out.
Now replace the impeller or the whole pump anyway.
After setting 5years it should be replaced.
Now the fuel lines and diaphram in the fuel pump.
Replace them too.Ethanol is not our friend!!!

Sorry I though I had replied....it's a 2 hole housing. Got the parts today and installed the new ones. The old impeller looked just fine to me could hardly tell the difference between the old and new. But I put the new on just for the experience. Thanks for the reply, I'm taking your other steps next. Then to the water for a test run.

The two holes in the rear of the shroud are idle relief vents. When the engine is sitting low in the water like at rest or trolling, there is too much of the leg in the water and exhaust backpressure builds up causing a poor idle. These vents relieve the backpressure, improving the idle. They also allow smoke back into the boat if the wind is blowing that way. Since the water drops directly in front of the exit port, at idle, exhaust pressure will blow some out in a spray.

On muffs it is difficult to get enough water through the engine to exit these ports, but during running in the water there should be water exiting them. On muffs you need to turn the pressure up high and it may take a few seconds or more for water to exit them.

ALL water exits at the bottom of the head through the match plate, and fills the area around the inner exhaust downtube and inner leg. This cools both of them. Most water will exit through several holes in a flange in the inner leg and out with the exhaust, but excess will exit through the idle relief vents.

Look closely at the first photo and you will see water exiting from the exhaust relief vent in a steady stream. You may also see it in the second photo but it is more of a spray.

Thanks! Had it in the water yesterday. Everything seems good to go. Now the steering is out......time to do a search on that one. Thanks again to all!
