I have a question. My bass boat has two batteries to run the trolling motor. The trolling motor that was on it got broke and the one that replaced it wasnt the same brand. So the plug does not work that is on it and the old trolling motor got throwed away. The two batteries of course each have their own postive and negative and the wires run to the front of the boat. Can I hook positive to positive and negative to negative and then hook my trolling motor into them? Will this cause something bad to happen? I cant really see what the problem would be as long as I dont cross positive and negative. Any and all help is welcome.. Thanks in advance..

I don't see a problem with it as long as the polarity is correct.

Re: New here with a question

Bad things can happen if wiring is wrong. But until we know whether the original wiring was 24 volts and the current motor is 12 volts, we can't help you. If the plug and receptacle are mismatched you have three choices, 1) replace the plug on the motor, 2) replace the receptacle, or 3) replace both. Let us know what the original wiring was and whether the new motor is 12 or 24 volts.

Re: New here with a question

Here are diagrams that show the difference between two batteries in series (24 volts) and two batteries in parallel (12 volts). If you have a 12 volt motor, wire the batteries in parallel.

Re: New here with a question

The boat already has two sets of + and - wires run to the front where the old trolling motor was at. So cant I just hook the + and - of the wires to two diffrent batteries and then up front just splice both +'s and both -'s together and then hook them to the trolling motor? Thanks for all the replys..

you dont need 2 sets of wires use 1 set from battery to trolling motor and use 2 jumper wires from positve to positve and negative to negative as long as its 12 volt.

Re: New here with a question

Look at Silvertip's post with the pictures. Yes, you can make a paralell hook up at the ends of the cables just as well as at the batteries. Plus to Plus, and Minus to Minus will get you 12 volts. Be extremely careful to identify the cables as to which they are because if you go + to - twice you get a circuit, sparks, hot cables and perhaps a burning boat!!!! Just make sure of your identification, I use a red cable and a black cable for easier id.
