I had someone replace the impeller and it no longer shifts into gear. What could have gone bad?
When I looked it over there was a pin that wasn't replaced in the shaft I replaced it but still wont go into gear.

Is the upper shift shaft mated to the lower shift shaft? If not, and it is possible, the motor will not shift.

BTW - who did you have do the work? A mechanic?

If either the control arm was moved or the shift shaft in the lower unit turned before assembly then it is probable the shift cam in the lower is not in 'synch' with the control.

The lower unit will need to be dropped, the shift cam turn to the detent for Reverse gear, make sure the control arm is also in Reverse and reinstall the LU.

If you paid someone to do the work they should make it right.

Yes it was a mechanic that did the work. I have it back at his shop now.

The reason I was asking the question was because, last season my power pack went out on me and I got stuck. I think it got wet. When I put it in gear it would stall out on me. So I was just wondering if it was something I did. It is working now. The mechanic made it right. I hope haven't been out on it.

The shift shaft is out of sync, drop the L/U and sync it back up. It's easy enought to screw up, I would have thought that he would have checked it before you picked it up.

powerpacks (actually Merc calls them Switchboxes) do not fail if they get wet. They are potted with epoxy.

Sounds like your carbs were dirty.
