Hello

I have a very interesting situation. My dad gave me a 7.5 HP Chrylser outboard motor still in its original box though the box was pretty well gone. This motor has NEVER been run. The model # is 72H9B and the serial # is 4282. The fuel line and owners manual were missing and my dad cannot find them. I have replaced the fuel line and included an inline fuel filter. I am somewaht mechanically inclined but not with two stroke boat motors. I want to run the motor and not damage it so I have some concerns.

1.) From what I can gather reading through the forums on older motors fuel/oil mix should be 50:1. Is this correct?

2.) Since the motor has sat for so long should the drive oil be changed?

3.) Are there any seals/gaskets which I should replace before running it for the same reasons as in #2?

4.) Should I replace the water pump before first running it for the same reason as #2?

5.) I purchased an item so I can attach a garden hose to the water intake. How much water and how hot should the water be coming out of the water ports when the motor is running?

I have lurked in this form for a while and was impressed with all the help people get when asking questions. I really appreciate any and all help I can get. Thanx.

50-1 is correct.
Don't change the lower unit oil
Seals and gaskets should be OK.
Run the engine and try the water pump before deciding to change the impeller. The impeller MAY have taken a "set" but it may still be good--After all, the engine was never used at all.
Exiting water is usually uncomfortably hot on the larger engines--I never ran a small one on muffs so I could not really say but I suspect it would be the same.

Oh, yeah, I forgot: That engine is junk from sitting too long. I'll give you 10 bucks for it!------LOL

I would expect that the fuel pump diaphragm needs to be changed, but since it has never been run and exposed to ethanol, who knows. I'd replace it for peace of mind, along with the impeller. It's probably a good idea to pull the plugs and put a bit of 2 stroke oil into the cylinders and pull it over a couple of times. When starting it up initially, I'd run it at 25:1 to coat everything with oil, then add more gas to the tank (and shake it up) to change the ratio to 50:1. For that small outboard, I would place it in a tank of water instead of using ear muffs. I use one of our garbage cans filled 1/2-3/4, so the water pump in the lower unit it submerged.

Oh, yeah, I'll give you 20 bucks for it!-------Let the bidding wars begin :D

Yeah! Forgot that it needs a break-in of a couple of gallons of 25 to 1. And I'm up to 22 bucks---LOL

$22.50...........

I'm not sure of the vintage of your 7.5, or if it's the same as my 88 Gamefisher (Force/Mercury/Chrysler) 7.5HP, but mine runs really well and has a lot of power for a 7.5HP. It's basically a de-tuned 15HP outboard, smaller carb, no exhaust tuning, probably a couple other minor things. It runs really strong for a 7.5HP.

Re: New in Box 7.5 HP Chrysler Outboard RE What to Do for First Time Use?

Gentlemen

Thanks for all the input and thanks to all for the offers to buy my "junk" but looking at the prices of outboards I think I will keep it. The best info I can find on the year leads me believe it a 1979 model year motor.

I really am glad you mentioned the break fuel/oil ratio. I would have not known that. How long should the motor be run with that mix?

I think I will run it in the trash can to see how it does. Just to be on the safe side I think I will get the carb diaphram and impeller. I have noticed parts are not easy to get for this motor. Where is a good place to still get parts online?

There is more to this story. Along with the motor my dad also gave me a Folbot Runabout. For those who do not know what this is it is a 4 person skin on frame boat. It can be used as a sailboat, row boat or as a motorboat. But it too was barely used. I remember as a kid camping with the family in Buck Pond NY and dad taking me sailing. Funny thing is that was the only time I remember seeing it in use. My daughter saw me set it up and is eager for me to get it out in the water. The weather here in the PacNW has not been cooperating much and I have not been able to get the skin in the sun long enough to help soften it so it will stetch across the frame. I will post some pictures of all the "junk" soon,

Thanx again for all the input.

WOW! I remember ads for the Folboat! I suspect that you will get a lot of "looks at the ramp when you use this combo.

Don't bother babying the engine and breaking it in in a barrel of water. That is probably the worst way to do it.

USE it on the boat and run one 3 gallon tank of 25 to one through it. Vary the speeds a bit but don't use full throttle until the break-in fuel is used.

Remember though: Once you do anything to this engine, it no longer is a virgin. If it were mine, before I used it or changed any parts, I would go over to The Chrysler Crew and talk to Franz Buddenberg or Dave Kain to see what the actual worth is. Usually classic engines are not worth that much but in this case, given a motivated collector and the pristine condition it might surprise you.

For parts, you can order them here on Iboats. I would stay away from the Mallory parts as I've had problems with them on my 7.5HP. Ebay is another source or you might be able to get them at your local Mercury dealership. Chrysler sold out to Force, then Force sold out to Mercury, so now Mercury stocks parts for these motors. Though,,, I'm not sure if they would be able to look up P/N's for your OB. I usually look them up online myself, then call the local shops. If I go in and tell that I have a "Gamefisher" or "Force" ("Chrysler") they get a queezey deer in the headlights look..... For looking up parts, try http://www.crowleymarine.com/parts.cfm
