new lower unit different?!

i ordered a lower unit from ebay and it was supposed to interchange but it looks different. mine has slots on the side and a larger cav plate. the new one has six holes on the side. can anyone tell me the difference? bolt pattern is same far as i can tell. 1988 johnson vro90.

Welcome!<br /><br />Sounds like you bought an older version. No problem. Is the one you bought indeed a V4?<br /><br />Is the overall length the same?<br /><br />Is the bolt pattern spacing the same?

thanks for the reply! as far as i can tell everything else is identical. shaft, shift shaft, bolt pattern. the prop shaft looks a little different. the new one has shorter splines. im just curious if there might be different gearing or anything im not thinking of. im not a pro at this.
