Re: New Marine Paint??

If the paint is anything like the primer, I think I am going to like it! After thinning it, I sprayed it on with a HVLP sprayer. It went on quite well. After drying (about 2 hours), it was sandable and recoatable. It forms a TENACIOUS bond with the fiberglass and wood. I used the white primer this time, For the insides of the hull and deck, and the coverage was pretty good, given that it was a white primer.

I decided to go with Supermarine also for my fiberglass restoration project. I have their primer, thinner, prep, and top side paint. I'm sanding and filling nicks and holes right now, but I'll be spraying the primer in the next week or two. I'm glad to hear you like the paint so far - makes me feel a bit more at ease. :)

OK folks,
Anyone of you guys got any results for us yet? Sorry I keep bringing back all of these old paint strings but I am trying to decide on a paint for my little project and I am counting on your experiance!

I haven't used the supermarine, but I have recently been researching marine paint. I have heard from several folks that it's not worth the money. Quite a few guys didn't feel like it was as user friendly as some of the other more common brands and others have had problems with it not hardening properly. That could have been operator error though. I don't really have a trustworthy opinion, but that's what I've heard. Good luck.

I've been working through the 'bugs' in the system, and am getting great results. There is a bit of a learning curve to it- It 'handles' differently than other paints that I have worked with. You have to follow the directions pretty carefully, it's not as forgiving as yacht enamels or single part polys are- especially when it comes to the thickness you apply it at!

I'm still working on a test piece with the actual topside paint, but have primed the decks and inside of the hull with the etching primer.

I'll be doing a more complete write up on the paint in the near future, once I get the decks painted.

I also have to mention that I have NOT had any problem dealing with the company, although there are some complaints about them. I've dealt with them a few times now, and they have been great... I DID have the wrong color of primer shipped to me once, but they corrected the problem fast.

Here's my update: I just finished my last coat of etching primer (SM-664D). So far so good. In fact, this stuff is great. I'm using a gravity feed sprayer and thinning about 10% (SM-605). The primer goes on nice and dries quickly, but not too quickly. The primer has gone over old paint (sanded), fiberglass and Marine-Tex putty with zero problems. It really sticks to any surface. Next I'll be lightly sanding the whole finish and then the bottom and top coats go on...

Oh, I've also dealt with the company over the phone a couple of times and they've been great.

Looking good... I just put the second (and final) coat of etching primer on mine, too... I used white primer, then overcoated it with red oxide, since I'm painting a red color, it'll cover better.

I too love the coverage of the primer. I sprayed the white, with a turbine powered HVLP sprayer, and it went on well. I thinned probably about 20% or so, my sprayer doesn't like thicker paints. I opted to roll the second coat with a foam roller, and it turned out almost as smooth as the sprayed on coat. Part of that is probably due to me being so 'green' with a sprayer!

You'll find that it sands beautifully, too- Better than most primers I've used.

Dry to the touch in about 2 hours and I'm giving it about 2 days between coats (this photo was taken 1 day after second coat).

Re: New Marine Paint??

Hi Trego.... Keep up the updates. I'm looking at these SuperMarine 1000 system as well. Haven't pulled the trigger yet.
Have you scratch tested or wet sanded/blended any areas yet?
New to this forum. Restoring an old 78 Apollo. bottom's toast...bare glass on keel. Planning to epoxy barrier coat, fair/fill w/ epoxy fillers, prime then top coat - all w/ roll/tip method. Will tackle sides and topside after this season's over.
Was about to use Pettit or Brightsides (Pettit scratch tested better on a Jamestown Dist video) - still curious as to how this stuff compares.

Attached pics of bottom, new interior and trailer conversion to bunks.

I'm a rookie at spray painting boats, so I don't know how to scratch test or blend areas. I did very lightly sand between coats just to clear off any dust/lint that stuck to the paint followed by a tack cloth.

Very nice, What kind of Gun and compressor did you use to shoot your paint?

Re: New Marine Paint??

I just used a Lowes Kobalt brand gravity feed spray gun and a 25 gal compressor. I allowed two days between coats and made sure they were applied around 70 degrees per the instructions. The white dried faster (2-3 hours to touch) than the blue (5-6 hours dry to touch) which was mentioned in the instructions.

All in all this is a great paint. I have limited experience with this kind of paint project, so take it for what it's worth. I think the results speak for themselves.
