Re: Question about I/O's

Hey Old Boat Luvr. After you do what you can on the switches don't get carried away with replacement. You have a couple of relays that could be causing the problems. The fact that trailer and up aren't working leads me to the relays.

Post up in the MerCruiser forums. TnT is Tnt, even for the glasser guys. They can help with the plugs you found too,

Welcome to the Starmada. Welcome to the Starmada. I didn't stutter, you showed up with a case of MBS. :D

Re: Question about I/O's

Well this is what I've found so far. The switches can be completely disassembled and cleaned. Basically they are a copper cup and two copper contacts. unfortunately copper oxidizes so I cleaned everything with emery cloth and applied a thin film of dielectric grease. Now I found a new problem that is probably throwing a wrench in they system.
bad wiring on Holiday.jpg
This is two wires (green and purple) that go the limit switch(es) on the outdrive I think. The insulation on them was completely rotted, probably all the way from the coupler terminals to the switch itself for all I know.
Do these two wires go to one limit switch or two? neither of these two wire are grounded out so I guessed that they might complete a circuit and tied the two together and now when I press the middle button I can raise the outdrive all the way up.
The top (Up) button still does nothing so I'll have to do more research on that.
The Bottom (In) button doesn't do anything either. I thought it was working but all it does is make noise. I can hear the pump running but no movement on the outdrive??? What's up with that? I did add about 2/3 of a quart of oil to the pump reservoir after tightening down a pressure line on the bottom back of the pump.
Got frustrated and am working on getting the lights to work now.
Hey GA Boater: I'll try the other forums too. Thanks. Also I only see one relay on the front of the pump. Are there more?
I REALLY appreciate all the input from everyone buy the way!

OBL - Relay set-up depends on which MC model you have. I assume it is a MerCruiser. It's been over 10 years since I had one so memory is fuzzy. Heck could have been last week. LOL

The limit switches are drawing a blank too, so I'm no help here. Those guys in the M/C forum can nail this dead nuts and refer you to manuals too.

Re: Question about I/O's

Well had to do something productive so I polished all the knobs, replaced the bilge switch so now I have a bilge pump that works (those come in handy sometimes) cleaned all the corroded contacts and replaced all the bulbs so I now have navigation lights! Still waiting on my new Fumoto oil drain valve so I can put oil in it and fire her up for the first time in 12 years. I'm excited!

Here's some pics of my new project. Other than a new fuel tank, fuel lines, oil/filter, fix a few electrical bugs and probably tear out that hideous blue astro turf someone installed, it's pretty much ready to take on the water.

Bad news for My boat

Bad news for My boat

Well finally got the fumoto oil drain valve installed and filled it up with Mobil 1 10w/30 and she fired right up! then started an occasional loud knock so I pulled the valve cover to see if maybe I had a collapsed lifter but all the pushrods were tight so I reinstalled that (oil pressure must be good too because it shot oil clear out of the boat from the rocker galley. knocking bacame constant and I just shut it off. I'm guessing either a rod knock? Very loud clacking (sounds like a torque converter bolt is hitting the side of the block or something. I'm bummed.

Re: Bad news for My boat

Well found out what the knocking sound was. Water hammer. #4 cylinder was getting water in it so I either have a blown head gasket, a cracked head or a cracked intake manifold. All I can hope for now is that it didn't damage the rod or main bearings or bent a connecting rod. Apparently the previous owner never winterized it probably before storing it. Now if I can just figure out why it won't tilt down. Ah projects!

Re: Bad news for My boat

#4 could be getting water from the exhaust manifold/riser too. You aren't getting water in the oil are you? That's a sign of a cracked block due to freezing. I hope not.

I see you're posting in the Mercruiser section. As you've seen , they are a bunch of helpful guys. They can give you better advice on the watery cylinder. I do hope it's not a serious problem. Take achris up on the offer of the owners manual.

No water in the oil thank goodness! The exhaust riser was cracked and I replaced it so I'm hopin it's the manifold. Already was emailed a download for the service manual! Dang I love this forum! I can't wait to get this boat up water ready!

Re: Bad news for My boat

Well found a free manifold (aftermarket OSCO?) with a crack on the bottom outside and drilled a hole on each side of the crack, took a grinder and notched out the crack almost all the way through and then filled it with J. B. Weld. Let it sit for 24 hours then built me a block off plate for where the riser goes. installed a pressure gauge at the drain plug port and a 1" ball valve at the inlet and filled it with hot water to 120psi. No leaks. Yay! Reinstalled and started her up. Runs great though idle is too high. Guess I'll have to install a new manifold gasket cause the old one is causing a bad vacuum leak. But she runs! Impeller is pumping water adequately, all gauges work and in normal operating range. Temp is normal, oil pressure is 20 psi and amp meter shows it's charging the batteries! SWEET!

That's good news, OBL. It might be worth while to go ahead and change the impeller. If the boat has been laid up a while the rubber can get hard/brittle. The last thing you want is an old impeller to take a dump miles or even feet from the ramp. Cheap insurance. Sounds like you're almost ready to splash. :D
