Hello All,
First off, let me say that this site will be a blessing as time goes on. I just bought our first family boat. And I know a lot of you will cringe when you read this but I bought it without first hearing it run:rolleyes:. I do have a guarantee that the boat is in great shape other than what was disclosed during the sale The only thing that is really wrong with the boat is the starter.
I have yet to troubleshoot to to verify that it is the starter due to the weather. Assuming it is the starter, how hard is it to replace in my boat. I should have said that I bought a 1996 Capri 2050 LS with the 4.3l merc. It looks like there is room but like I said the weather is crap so I haven't really delved into it. I know this is a long post but your input will be appreciated. I'm not new to boating, but new to owning a boat and I want the season to "start" without a hitch.

Re: New member with a question.

Welcome to iboats! I'm going to move this thread to the I/O repair section where you'll get better responses. I would advise you to only post questions specific to Bayliner hulls down in the manufacturer sections as they don't get nearly the traffic.

First off I hope your guarantee is for real. Also, in the "adults only" section you should find and download your applicable manuals. The starter shouldn't be too hard depending on access, but I would make sure that's the problem first. What are the symptoms of the "bad starter"?

Welcome to iboats.
I think if you go to the adults only sticky at the top of this (the IO forum) you will find quite a lot to read and learn till the weather clears.
Here is a link to get to it till yo find your way around. Click Here

If all you need is a starter, your very lucky. At least you have come to the right place. As good weather comes in there will be plenty of help. Us ,up hear ,we are still snowed in.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard...

Disconnect the wires from the starter, then it's held on with 2 bolts, Straight up from the bottom....
Probably 9/16" heads...

Good to know you are going to troubleshoot it before simply replacing the starter as it could be a bad connection, or a faulty slave solenoid... or a host of other things. Many of which are easier than replacing the starter.

In the links section suggested above is this post. Take a good look at that and read through it while the weather is bad so you will know what to do when it warms up. Good luck!

Re: New member with a question.

Funny, you trumped my pun with one that was even worse:D.

You are going to need a hitch to get it to the water.

Guarantee is good, so that isn't a worry. Regarding the starter, the access is what I was questioning, that is why I had originally posted this in the Bayliner forum. I was wondering if anyone with this model or similar has replaced one and could let me know how the access is. From topside it doesn't look too bad but I'm not positive and it is pretty cold out to be screwing with it now.

As far as symptoms for the starter, previous owner said it seemed like it was getting weak. I know that could caused by about a dozen different things. I will have to troubleshoot myself when weather improves.

Re: New member with a question.

For those that were wondering, I recieved a new (not rebuilt) starter from DB electrical and installed it recently. Install went easier than I had expected, was a stretch but doable. Would have taken less time had I remembered sooner than half way through the project that I had airtools instead of doing everything manually:confused:. Most of my tools had been in storage for a couple years until recently and it is difficult to remember sometimes to work smarter not harder.

Weather also warmed up enough recently to summerize (thanks for the good infor in the merc sticky) and get it running:D. Took a few minutes to get it started and it runs like a top. Still need to finish the tune up though, I am just relieved that it runs as I did not hear it run prior to the purchase.

Thanks to all who offered advice.

That's great!
Since you said something about this being your first boat, you did start it with a flush adapter ("muffs") on the drive....um, with the water hose ON first, didn't you?

Also, if the previous owner cannot tell when the raw water pump was replace last.....you should replace it along with the drive oil, engine oil etc....

Cheers,

Rick

Re: New member with a question.

Thank you for your concern. Yes muffs were used. This is my first boat, but I am not new to boating.
