I have a 1993 Mercruiser 470 I/O. There is a hose thats runs underneath the engine going from the engine to the stern, held on by hoseclamps. Mine is torn. What is the purpose of this hose & is it important that I replace it ? Also what is the recomended size battery for this engine ? I will be running a stereo & some accessories also. Thanx !!

Howdy,

What size is the hose and where is it connected to the "engine"?

It probably is the raw water supply from the transom to the heat exchanger but you'll have to be little more specific....

Do you have a Mercruiser serial number for your engine? Merc stopped building the 470 style engines in 1989.

If it goes to a thru hull fitting on the side or rear of the boat, its your bilge hose and you need to get it fixed.
If it's a 3 inch hose like behind your clothes dryer. That's the bilge blower hose and you need to get it fixed
If it's hooked to the oil pan and runs back to the drain plug, It's for draining the engine oil and "Everybody"
You need to get it fixed!

As far as battery size...the biggest that will fit in the battery compartment.
The 470 has a stator type charging system like an outboard.IF it still works and charges you will be lucky.
If it does not charge it gets really expensive. Most people buy a kit to convert it over to an alternator system...about 500 bucks for the kit.
