We have a new motor coming for our 19-6 aquasport, motor is a 95 evinrude 130. Boat was previously powered by dual evinrude 50hp, one of which blew a quarter sized hole in the piston due to a failed VRO unit. After rebuilding the motor, we were advised by our mechanic to remove the VRO. So we did, and have been pre mixing ever since, happily.

With another VRO motor on the way we are unsure of what to do. One one hand it would be nice to not have to mix the fuel, but a blown motor is pretty bad. The motor had a new VRO pump put on it in 02 if that means anything.

What do you all think? Keep it or Junk it? If removed are their any ill effects on the motor or fuel economy?

Thanks very much-

A VRO cannot put a hole in one piston, so I doubt that was the culprit of your previous engine failure, most likely a lean fuel mixture, over propped, or improper timing.

To learn about the myths of the VRO, click on the BOATING FORUMS tab on the upper right of your screen, then go to the Engine FAQ section of these forums, section F. "more about VRO's" for the whole story.

Hi
I have posted a bit in "outboard non repair topics" and it is along the line that you must at some time trust the manufacturers product or you would only ever have a rope start, tiller steer, manual gear shift, mix your own fuel outboard, plus a heap more bits and pieces as all those things are just "extra" bits that can fail, and all things can and do fail but you just have to live with it, who wants a car without power steering? and a crank handle in the front instead of a battery and starter? not me, give me VRO anytime

How often does VRO failure cause engine trauma?

What are the negatives that coem with removing the VRO? Besides the added time of dumping in a quart of oil at fill up?

What does the VRO, variable ratio oil inject? right? And if I pre mix then I will lose the Variable, what will this cause or effect?

thanks for the help
Tony

my personal experience is never had a VRO failure, and I have had quite a few outboards and done a lot of hours, but, it can and almost certainly does fail, I know of a new outboad that the oil system packed it in after 2 hours, but there are thousands that are still going after years of use (mine) and you will loose the 'variable" mix if you mix your own but this is not a major drama just a bit more smoke at low/idle speeds, when going at WOT all will be well so disconnect if you feel at risk or leave be and live "on the edge" like a million other people all over the world
