hi. I was looking to replace my 1954 johnson seahorse (10hp) with a new or very lightly used motor in the 15hp range. Weight is a mojor concern for me because we carry our boat and often have it loaded close to capacity. (its a 14 foot tinney) Do not have alot of money and here is what i was looking at.

Parsun 2stroke new
apparently ways 79 lb and i can get it for $1958.00 after all taxes and what not

Parsun 4stoke new
apparently ways 106lb and i can get it for $2328.00 after everything

Nissan/ Tohatsu new 4stroke
apparently ways 110 lb and i can get it for $2150.00 after everything

2003 Mercury 4stroke from local dealer
apparently ways 114lb and i can get it for %1800 after everything + i can see it run because its from a local dealer not online. Says it was sold from him new and not used 1st season. then found to be underpowered and traded back in for 25hp. i believe him because this motor is very clean and shows very little sign of use.

1983 15hp johnson electric start
apparently only weighs 70lb and i can get for $900

i am no mechanic and would like a trouble free motor for years to come. Thanks

any opinions or suggestion would be great

PS i live in Windsor Ontario Canada rate across the river from Detroit.

OK, so I Googled Parsun and found their webpage. But I still have a question: What the sam-hill is a Parsun?

Parsun is the Chinese motor, that they are so confident in they ship extra parts with the new motor. i understand not approved in the US. i would not touch a Parson, no support for parts. the Johnson of the 2003 Merc would be my choice. and with 4 stroke maintanance i would go Johnson 2 stroke. 1983 is just broken in good.

Just my opinion,
I would want the '83 15, too. $900 sounds like a dealer price?? If the dealer will back it up with a 30 day warranty or something similar, I'd be even more interested in it. If it will run for 30 days, it will probably run for many years to come. The electric start is particularly nice. Those are really good motors. My stepbrother had one and ran it for many years, then sold it to my brother-in-law who let my dad borrow it for many years and he is notorious for tearing up boat motors, then I bought it from my brother-in-law. I hit a stump and burst the guts out of the lower unit and had to replace it with a used one. I sold it after a few years and it was still running good.
I'd at least want to run the '83 15hp before paying 900 for it if it had no warranty whatsoever.

thanks for the suggestions. I lied the johnson is actually $950 + shipping and its an evinrude(same thing no?) also i can only see the merc running (the only local motor) however the parsun or Tohatsu are new (dont want the Parsun) I was thinking about the Tohatsu(shows how much i know lol)

any more suggestions welcomed

Thanks

Get the Merc 4 stroke. While the Johnson is a good motor, it's also 25 years old and it doesn't take a lot to create a $1000 bill if it breaks.
Avoid anything with no dealers or local parts/service.
Have been in the marine industry as a tech for about a kazillion years, never heard of Parsun before. Had a Tohatsu about 20 years ago. Spent more on parts than I did for the motor. Best thing that ever happened to me was when someone stole it.
