New Motor?

I recently purchased a Hurricane boat with what I thought was to be a "new" Yamaha 150 HP motor. When I took delivery of the boat and later looked at the manufacture date, the motor was made in June 2006! How can they say that is a new motor when it has been sitting for 3 years? Even if it has never been used, is it considered a "new" motor.

Re: New Motor?

Fairly common, CB. If it is identical to the current motor and has never been used it will be offered as a "new" outboard with full warranty.

I, too, question the ethics of this practice for two reasons:

1. There are parts that may have a limited shelf life that can deteriorate even in safe storage. Impellers and gaskets immediately come to mind.

2. Should you want or need to sell the engine its value is significantly depreciated compared to a new current model.

I wouldn't have any objection to the dealer explaining what is being offered and discounting it, but to hide those important facts is danged close to fraud.

When I bought my 1983 Boston Whaler Outrage 18 new, it was rigged with a previously unused 1982 model Johnny 150 (made in 1981), discounted 15% and with full warranty. I was happy, the dealer was ethical and honest.
