I am brand new to boating, but am already in love. We purchased a 1993 Chaparral 1800 with a Volvo Penta motor (231, V6) and outdrive. The boat was flawless when I purchased it.

Upon launching it I noticed that one of the bunker boards was floating on one side. I could not find the first bolt so I tightened the other bolts, went boating and then came back in. Upon my next time launching I noticed that there was a lot of white stuff around the hole and the carpet was torn. Unfortunately the bolt had popped through and put a pretty deep 12 to 15 inch scratch in the hull. The scratch did not go any deeper than the gel coat (pictures attached) but is pretty deep.

I am looking at fixing the hull myself (since the repair shops wanted $500 to $1000 to fix it). I am looking at purchasing the Evercoat Premium Gel Kote with the Evercoat Mold Release. My hull is white so I am looking at the purchasing the white (hoping it will match).

Anyone every use this stuff and if so how hard is it? I am relatively handy but want to see what all of you had to say. Thank you in advance for any information you can share!!

ouch .......sorry bout the ding in the hull.

welcome to iboats !.......
we call this area the dry dock !

ok.......dont care what kind of gellcoat you use.....but what is that mold release stuff for??????????

the white will not be the same white as your boat....sorry.....

look at the link in my sig......read the index....it has a simple gellcoat repair in it......go to that page and its all there for you.

the release stuff you are looking at is stuff called pva.....gellcoat drys tacky in the open air. actually air inhibits gellcoat cure) so you spray the pva over the repaired gellcoat....then wash it off....fair flat and buff.

Are your scratches cosmetic only, or are they into the glass itself?

Cosmetic only. They are to the glass but no damage to the glass. I was out all day before I knew the scratches were there and there was no water in the boat!

The mold release is the curing agent that actually hardens the gel coat (or at least that is what they say).

If I were to do this myself, how would I get the boat off the trailer? I have to get to the spot above the bunker as well as replace the bunker so I will not have the problem again!! Thank you!!!!
