New OEM trim Motor install issues

I have ordered a new OEM eaton style trim motor. I was able to get the old one out, with a little tapping it to loosen it and wiggled it on out of the hole. Now i am having issues getting the new one to sit all the way down in the hole. I have tried sitting it down and turning it and it is still about not quite eighth of an inch from sitting all the way in. It just does not seem to want to go all the way down to were it seals in so i can bolt it back on. Is there a special trick to getting these things back in. FYI i have a 175HP 86 yr mercury outboard.

You have to spin the motor body back and forth by hand until the little hex shaft drops down into pump. Sometimes you even have to lift motor off and use the hex shaft to turn pump a little bit.

btw - i sure could use a top cover for an eaton. do you have yours? is it uncracked? could I have it?

the pump is already attached to the motor. I no longer have the old motor. here is the link to the motor i bought.

I remember when i took the old motor out i have to tap on it to get it to turn and than use a flat head screw driver to put it up a little than wiggle it out. So i thought putting it back in i would just turn it and it would seal in. But it just twist all the way around and is just under about eighth of an inch from being where it should be. i have tried pressing on it to hopefully get it to go all the way in with no luck.

Just a thought sometimes dry orings try to roll out of the groove.

I assume the new one matches identical with the old one. Nothing dropped in the hole

yeah, this thing has been a pain from the get go. Finally got to the point of getting the last screw off to the motor, than to find out it didn't budge, So had to tape on it with a hammer and chisel to get it to turn and finally got it out. Got the motor checked out by a electrical shop and they said it is best to replace it. So did that, now having issues getting the new exact same one back into the hole. Once i do that, than i will need to know how to get the air out of the pump. Mercury said i could use any ATM fluid in red color. Not sure though if the screws and everything on the bottom of the pump are in the same spots as the old once since i no longer have it. But i do not see anything that would keep it from going all the way in. I tried turning it back and forth and it stays at the same distance from being all the way in.

no nothing that i know of. i looked down the hole and see nothing, just some grooved placed and a rectangular looking whole i guess is what fills the hole with the ATM fluid. Motor looks the same as the old motor that i took out.

if it was me getting really frustrated with a chinese part that didn't seem to fit ... then i would have taken out my caliper and measured how far down into the reservoir the new part goes and then i would have measured the reservoir to make sure it would fit. If that checks out the i would be making dry runs without the orings and then graduating to full assembly.
