New old guy with OMC 35hp ?

Recently I got a 30-35 hp OMC vintage around 1992 pull start, tiller, long shaft ex- Military outboard. It has the ACT drive lower unit and the dewatering valve. Before trying to start it I changed out the fuel pump diaphram, changed the lower units grease, new plugs and the complete water pump. Yesterday I hung it on the boat, hooked up my ear muffs and started it up on the 3rd pull. But no water out the tell-tale. I did get water out of the tell-tale by holding the ear muffs real tight to the intakes but also got some water coming out the hole in the rear of the housing by the lower mount. Is water coming out this hole normal with forced water pressure? TIA

it tell me you probably need and impeller., by holding the muffs you are forcing the water thru, rather than the impeller pumping it thru. everything else sound normal. by the way, a 92 is not vintage, or even old. the 50's are vintage, the 40's are old. your's is just getting broken in good.

The vintage term was a bad choice of words. I just don't know it's exact age as the original ID plate is missing. But I do have a 54 3hp Seahorse that really is vintage and I'm sorry I sold (cheap) the 41 1.5hp that worked perfect.
The forcing of the water does make sense with the flow problem. I did fit a complete water pump assembly before I tried to start it? Where could I have messed up as all the pumps I've done over the years have worked
I'm trying to locate a big enough barrel for the next go round.

Did you remember to add the impeller key? Is the water pump connecting with the intake tube? There is a spacer between the pump and the intake tube. Is it inplace or damaged? The spacer doesn't come with the rebuild kit.

i use a large garbage can, and keep the hose running. raise the bow of the boat high enough to get the engine deep enough. when thru just disconnect the hose at the faucet and the barrel will siphon out.

As far as the key goes, it better be in there as I remember the Navy manual and the OMC pump kit instuctions read slightly different but when I installed it I realized it only went in one way. the spacer has the two O-rings and offset lumps that get set a certain way so the lower will fit in the upper housing, thats there. Now the actual water tube I believe is in right but without pulling it down again I can't say for sure if the top end is engaged right? That would be a real slap in the face if at 60 years old I missed hitting the hole
Tomorrow it's up to my club and close up the skeet range for the season, and I'll see if I can find a large enough OD barrel. The OD has to be at least 19" for the A.C.T. lower drive to fit. This is the type of outboard I have.

False alarm and stressing for nothing I guess. I got the barrel and the motor pee'd great? Why the muffs didn't work I have no idea. The trick with the draining worked good also. So Thank you all and know I have to build a transom jack to really test it out. :)
