I just aquired a 2004 115 Mercury Optimax with 2.2 original hours on it. The boat was purchased & used 1 time in fresh water in Florida and stored in a garage ever since. I realize the fuel tank and lines need to be flushed, but does anybody have recommendations for what to do about flushing the motor. And would you recommend lubricating the cylinders thru the spark plugs?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: New/Old Mercury

If gas has been sitting in the carb for years, it will need a cleaning/rebuild. I'd also change the oil in the lower unit. You may want to spray some oil in the cylinders also. Fogging oil or penetrating oil if the rings are stuck. Probably will need a new impeller.

It's an 04 Opti, it's DFI. Do not try to start it. Take it in and have it fully serviced. Tell them that the hours are correct and the it has not be run in several years. The little Opti's are good running and fuel efficient but they need to be properly maintained. You can do the basic maintenance yourself but you're better off letting a certified mechanic bring it to life after such a long sit.
