I spotted a new merc 30hp 4 stroke for sale, 2009 model still in the box with factory oil. Is there anything to be aware of with it? Either from the length of time not used (~5 years), or that model year?

If it's from an authorized dealer with a full warranty, I don't see any problem. The motors are well protected in the factory box.

Do most dealers have access to new old stock? Is the price a bargain?

Couple of things to be aware of. I don't know which model merc you are looking at, but the older NOS motors are sometimes carburetted motors, versus a newer EFI (electronic fuel injection) model. The dealers had trouble selling them as the carburetted models were being phased out becuase for just a little extra cash, you could get a much better motor (EFI). If the motor you are looking at is a carburetted motor, then comparing the price on the NOS with a new 30hp fuel injected model will be comparing apples to oranges.

If it is new old stock, it should still come with a warranty.

Thanks for the info peter. How would I find out if it is EFI or carburetted? It is a modern styled four stroke if that means anything (2009 model). I don't have any part numbers or model numbers yet.

The dealer should be able to tell you whether it is EFI or carburetted. To find out the information yourself, you would need the model number of the motor - generally, a google search will find what you will need.

For an example (it won't be your motor), compare the specs on the 25-30hp four strokes on this page, with the specs for the 20hp outboard. A few years ago, there were more carburetted options.

I did a quick search and any nos 30 hp mercs of the 4 stroke variety of that year showed as efi.simple answer is ask the seller.friend of mine bought a 50 hp 4 stroke merc a few years back and they (merc)had put on a new powerhead but he still got a full term warranty.

Those are same 30 HP Tohatsu rebadged EFI models, currently being produced. Would advise to check before engine is started if you have fuel remains inside internal fuel filter. If so clean internal fuel filter, as you could have very old fuel leftovers when factory tested and adjusted prior being boxed.. At least 2 strokes engines comes this way..

My understanding is the motor has never run - it is supplied with the factory oil so I would assume the crank case is empty, aside from maybe any oil that was on the parts when assembled? I suppose maybe it was filled up, tested, and drained? I contacted the seller... waiting for a reply.

You should replace the waterpump too. After sitting so long, it will have taken a "set", which is where the rubber vanes on the impeller stay curled and reduce the pumps capacity.

Not that one, aren't rubber made, are elastomer made, doesn't stay curled up if removed after long time sitting. Will literally spring back totally opened as a flower.
