Re: New or Used for First Timer?

I'd recommend going used....we did. The wife didn't have any boating experience...i had a little. When she was learning to dock it or trailer it and she bumped the dock or whatever it didn't matter. She and I both learned on that boat. Sold it for a little less than I paid for it 4 yrs later....upgraded to a beautiful Baja....no more bumping....got it out of our system. :)

Re: New or Used for First Timer?

My vote is with used. I have had waverunners and friends with boats for years, so I thought I was ready for anything. My 24' Wellcraft is a big boat, and it did take some getting used to. I have already scuffed up the bottom when I ran onto a trailer roller a bit sideways. If this was a new 40k boat, that black scuff would have been heartbreaking. In my 1984, I shrugged it off and learned from it.

As far as fuel use, since I have an aft cabin, a little smaller then you are looking at, I'll comment on what I have seen. My craft has a 260HP Merc I/O. I get a steady use of 10gal/hr @ 25mph so far. I have a 65 gallon tank so I would say I can safely go for just over 4 hours (100miles) and still have 20 gallons left in reserve. This would put the total effective range of the boat up around 150 miles with 5 gallons left over (a bit of a strech for my taste).

Hope this gives you an idea of how an older boat of the style you are looking stacks up.

Why is this 2 year old thread getting bumped?
