Can anybody help me. Thinking of buy a 115 or 135 Merc optimax over a 115 4 stroke Yamaha. It's going on a Campion Explorer 1995. What are the pro and cons?

Re: New out board

I've researched some of the new motors, the newest Mercs are the most fuel efficient on the market. The DFI's are more efficient, and produce less emissions than all of the four strokes out there.

Re: New out board

They are 1999. and they have been meticuosly mantein with and open chequebook since day one. I try to go offshore about ten times per yr and run about 13hrs per trip.I shouldn't have any problems with such little use.
I have to agree. A well mantain engine should not just brake. Well..these optimaxes do. Every other trip is something else. Alternator, relays, tilt motor, oil pump,
fuel pumps, blown pistones etc etc etc.I've read about several individuals wanting to sue Mercury cause they
problems with optimaxs.I'm about to that point myself.
I've been towed in from 50 miles offshore a couple of times thanks to these Mercury wonders.
Believe me if there is a secret maintenance formula
for these engines to quit having problems I will pay anything for it...May be not, because I'm saving my $ to buy 4 stroke suzukis.

Re: New out board

Buy an Evinrude E-Tec and you'll never have to worry about oil changes etc.

E-Tec's are the only motors that meet European emissions standards (I was told this by a friend who works for an Evinrude dlr so I'm not just pulling it out of my patootie!).

IMHO..................ed
