new overhaul

I just overhauled the motor. my waterpump went out when we were going across the lake. scored no. 1 cylinder. compression is good on all 6 but when we try to put it on the water it stalls out. starts right back up but it stalls out every time i put it in gear. at home i can put it in gear and it works fine. its a 83 mercury 140 hp. I have been a mechanic for 30 years but this one has me stumped. any ideas or troubleshooting i can do.

Howdy PCO.<br /><br />I assume that "at home" means on the muffs.<br /><br />No exhaust back pressure on the muffs, back pressure in the lake.<br /><br />Set up your mixture and idle speed in the lake and under load. End of problem.<br /><br />Good luck.
