I hope this is the right section. I think it is. for a new project thread and my adventures getting it going.

Buddy owed me some money. I know he can't really pay and it was not 100% his fault though his responsibility. I am not vindictive I would have let it go but he was gung ho to square up with me. SO he offers me a boat.

ahhh man I got 3 already and none run :) hehehe well one runs but I spun the prop need to save up for a new prop unit and put a new floor in it.

anyway I go to take a look at it (figure at least I might get something of my money out of it) I saw man this thing better run or we are going to go fishing and only one of us is coming back hehe :)

and of course. what else is new. its a bit of a wreck but I fall instantly in love with it. very cute small wide and "simple" (I like simple designs)

6ovLN3Sl.jpg

GYtROWZl.jpg

eUmVdQRl.jpg

I look at it and while I really like the "design" and that I could launch this with my tracker and recover it with the tracker and I could tow it with my metro and launch (with a winch) I am very intrigued.

then the money pit begins. no interior. no fuel line no fuel tank flat tire the other one is right behind it. bit of rust on the trailer (bracket not the frame it seems so should be fixable within a reasonable budget) no battery nothing connected to anything except at least the steering is linked up etc..

he goes yeah had it out on the river did 25 or so mph (questionable) I go WHEN. he goes a year ago. I go did you winterize it? he looks at me and blinks. I groan. of course not.

he says I had a guy offer me $600 for it. I say bull. if that was true I would not be standing here looking at it (we have been arguing over "value") he said well yeah he wanted to see it run.

I was getting exasperated. get this image. I am 400 pounds 6'4" and I wear the brightest colors money can buy I fling my arms up in the air wiggle them like a monkey point at him and go Eggggggzactly!!! IF IT RAN.

so lets go over the list here. Battery $150 Tank $50 Fuel line $50 $15 in gas $4 in oil $65 EACH TIRE though you could probably get away with ONE tire for a test ride since the launch is 500ft from your house. assuming the bearings are not blown. OWE and no seat so $35 walmart special with $26 mount and $30 for trailer lights.

THEN you might be able to "run it" THEN it might be worth $600 but at this point you will have over $600 into it. Do you see why he did not buy it and why I am standing here looking at it :) (I was not being mean or anything he is a decent friend of mine I was just trying to get him to realize that there is a reason boat means break out another thousand :)

I said the hull is worthless. it has zero real value. the trailer has no title so its near worthless $75 max less since its a boat trailer unless your buyer happens to need "that" specific size and shape :) basically scrap value.

the only thing of any real value is the motor and after I buy all this crap for it. the starter is seized. another $60 if I buy online $160 if I buy local.

yep. I come back the next day after popping $200 into a boat I don't even own yet.and no joy solenoid clicks and no life from the starter its seized hard (put power directly to the starter NOTHING)

uggggg. I decide to take it give him $75 plus the debt he owes me. I come back yet another day later (1.5+ hours each way. only 20 minutes from work but these are not my work days so its 3 hours round trip + each day) as luck (well not so lucky) would have it my versa trailer uses the same rim and tire. I take my nice new tire and put it on the boat and I make it 1/2 mile from his house to a plume of smoke coming from the trailer. Grrr I figure blown bearings I turn around and limp back at 5mph praying it don't fail or damage the spindle before I get back. 300ft from his place the tire shreds. I just keep going and park it.

Ugggghhhh. one more day. I come back with my brother to help tear the trailer apart and get the bearings and turns out the wheels still spin??? what the frak? the bearings need some loving (just going to replace) but its not the bearings the tire shredded on something

now. did it shred the other scuzzy nasty needs to be replace NOW tire on the trailer? NO. of course not. it shredded my nice new versa trailer tire. Grrrrr

goto my tire guy and get sticker shock and arrhythmia $65 just for the tire !! I don't have that kind of cash right now. $130 in tires plus install on rims! ouch. I check around nothing used or cheap anywhere and just for the heck of it I check my favorite goto place harbor freight. they have a 4.8 (versus 5.7) tire for $35 onsale for $30 and I have 25% off coupons up the wazoo. that is $22.50 a pop. 8" 4 lug rim like mine just a wee thinner (1" that will become ultra important in a moment)

rated for 560 that means 1100 pound max. no way this trailer and boat mass that much so it SHOULD be ok. I can always return if they don't fit (assuming I don't harm them)

they fit. and its a good thing I went this cheaper HF route. I discovered why the tire shredded. its a floating axle.

the axle had "shifted" to one side just a little bit so that the fatter 5.7x8 tire on that side was RUBBING against the inside of the rusty fender. that was the source of the smoke and the source of the shred. I can see the shiny metal spot where it was rubbing till it burst the tire

had I replaced the 5.7 without noticing this it would have simply shredded another tire. as luck would have it these thinner tires were JUST thin enough not to touch the frame and rub.

finally got the boat back to egg harbor (where I work)

I can relax for the moment. then the rains come. Uggggg. I want to try and get this in the water before winter. get so me use out of it before I properly fog it etc.. assuming it runs at all.

so I decide what the heck out comes the ajax with bleach and "berry" scent and I go out in the rain and give it a quickie scrubbing on the outside to get through the grime and see what I have.

its actually pretty darned nice.

I only cleaned up the top half only the outside not the inside or bottom of the hull yet but already its looking really nice.

mVko3QGl.jpg

the gel coat is in really nice shape all the cleats are clean and tight the windshield has zero issues its a decent "base" to work with.

the floor is a wreck badly done fiberglass overlay BUT it is "solid" no flex at all. the transom is rock solid and spotless. no serious damage at all except some rash in 1 or 2 spots (very minor) I am really liking this.

How about that motor. I was able to free it and I can rotate it by hand and I can feel compression. I found a starter rebuilt locally for $40 but two problems with that.

wrong bendex (he says I can swap them he being guy I bought the starter from) and I can not get the third bolt holding the starter in. its behind all the needle valves ?? at the back and I have zero confidence in my ability to dissassemble that with any chance of not screwing it up putting it back together. so when I get the motor looked over I will let him (mechanic) deal with that.

at least till I know what I am dealing with and have more skill with these engines.

I am pleased that the lower unit appears to have been cared for to some extent ie zinks. I see no pitting etc..

HKmZJVcl.jpg

Its going to be some work but assuming that motor runs well enough I think it will prove both worth it and enjoyable.

some of my immediate plans if it runs well. fix the tiny bits of rash. get some flush mount pop up cleats raise the windscreen at least double its current height (I am tall) get a top for it put some blue carpet and seats inside. LED the entire critter and paint it orange. bright bright orange with blue trim. (like my car)

UKgxgoTl.jpg

zLcFN5nl.jpg

yeah I am getting rid of those gaudy rims. I have no interest in "low profile $220 a pop tires!! my 155 80 13's are fine thanks :) but I love the orange :)

My geo tracker will get the same color :) (I really like orange)

found some cheap teak on craigslist I am going to reuse to replace that ugly vinyl instrument dash with teak and also make a teak mount for my tablet (chart plotting etc..) I have a water proof android tablet I plan to use on my boats now.

mfDMvbNl.jpg

I want to try and relocate the helm to the center if there is sufficient slack and put the larger instruments to the right so I can sit in the center (I am heavy so small boats tend to lean nicely when I sit along the side :)

SO what do you guys think? nice? ugly? anything.

its a 1971 larson. the guy I got the starter from thinks the motor is an 84 or so based on the pics I showed him ??? (3 cylinder electronic ignition 60hp johnson)

It will be a labor of love . . . Might cost more to fix it up than it would be worth, but if you are looking for a project . . . you could probably do it justice.

It will cost more to fix it up than it will ever be worth BUT...... That doesn't really matter here on iboats, because we will be happy to help you spend your money. ;) Seriously though, I would do nothing more to that boat until you know if you have a running motor for her. Maybe go ahead and sell the other three boats you have for some extra refurb cash.

Yeah, if I had 3 boats I couldn't afford to keep running I'd buy a fourth one that didn't run too!

Re: New project boat. God I hope its not a money pit cause its really nice :)

jigngrub. I did not really buy it. well not 100% voluntarily. he owed me money and was not able to pay this was how he paid. so it was take this or take a 100% loss on what he owed me.

I don't expect to ever get out of it what I put into it. that is just typically not how boats work. What I don't want is to put more money into it than I would have spent buying a turnkey boat (around $800) I am at $450 with this one now. :-( (including the lost money he owed me) technically I cam ommit the gas tank and fuel line since I bought those for the sailboat which pushes me down to $400 invested but they will get added again later since I will need to buy another set. I am eyeballing a 25gallon plastic tank on CL for $35 the fuel line I will just have to buy new used is unreliable for those parts.

as for my other 3 boats. those are a fun story. Also there is a difference between KEEPING a boat running (which I can afford for the most part) and GETTING a boat running. totally different beasts :)

my 21ft larson I actually use. I spun the hub last time I ran it. replace that and it can go right back into the water. the downer is I have to use the van to launch it and its a gas pig. I have been seeking a replacement a little smaller that I can safely launch with the geo tracker. this boat fits that bill.

the second boat is a 24ft renken. I got it for absolutely free. (I wanted the trailer) I have been trying to "get rid" of the boat for free but no one wants it so I will probably have to pay to dispose of it if I want to keep the trailer. (both have titles) its such a NICE trailer I may just pay to get rid of the boat.

every now and then I see 22-25ft cuddy cabin type boats in really nice shape running for relatively cheap but no trailer. I wanted the trailer so when I am financially able to take advantage of one of those deals I will "HAVE" a trailer to be able to run over and get it. We shall see what happens with that.

the last boat is my pride and joy. I have always wanted one never able to afford one this let me afford it knowing full well it would be a 3 or 4 year project. I actually have plans to sail it next summer.

a 27ft sailboat with trailer. I know it floats because I took it out of the water. $150 titles for both! I simply could not turn that down. I called him up and said I am on my way and went over to buy it. brought the empty trailer home first made it all legal lights bearings grease tires made sure it was all good and safe (big boat) went back. took 3 marina trips to get the bugger out (had a find a marina with a deep enough ramp to float it onto the trailer!!)

I have steadily been making progress with the sailboat. I am 75% through the keel swivel corrosion. it should be free soon (PB blaster and pressure washer) last summer I got a 9.9 LS motor for it! wonderful lady at a local bristol pa marina not only sold it to me via PAYMENTS ($400) but offered to help me with first sail in learning how to rig and sail it. I have the mast all the rigging all the sails including extra sales.

the hull is in good condition. I need to rebuild the rudder hatch cover and the interior is shot (kids vandalised it which is why he sold it so cheap) the old guy from brick nj lives on the water has a dock. he was using neighbors dock for the sail boat and that neighbor sold the house so the boat had to go. he was too old to sail solo anymore so he had a nice powerboat with a homebuilt heated cabin so he can fish even in the cold. so he just wanted it gone. I got a great deal. The trailer alone is worth $1500 so I consider this also to be "free" for all intents and purposes. Its my project of love and I will definitely be able to get more out of it than I put into it (mostly labor so free for me :) so if it turns out I hate sailing No loss :)

I will be making a project thread on the sailboat once its closer to sail worthy. I am super excited about that one.

SO the plan with the 71 larson.

I do not plan to put ANYTHING into it until I hear that motor run. that is numero uno. Cleaning it up and stuff is free so that's fine but no more hard cash till it runs.

if it runs and no major issues I will replace the hub on the blue larson and sell it in the spring. a working running boat on trailer with titles for both has to be able to fetch $400-$500 which will break me even and leave me with a running boat (the new 71 larson)

scrap the renken if I can't get someone to take it for free

and I will end up with 2 boats. this 71 larson and my sailboat. perfect.

My ultimate goal is to build a 26 foot by 16 foot trailerable pontoon boat of my own design powered by a geo metro 3cyl engine to remove the vast majority of the "expense" of a boat (the engine since geo engines are dirt cheap to maintain and fix)

that is a pipe dream for now though. ALTHOUGH its getting closer to reality. I am starting to see engine-less pontoons of the size I need in the $1000 price range and I need 2 so the prices are coming down. maybe in a few years.

Re: New project boat. God I hope its not a money pit cause its really nice :)

Did a bit more work (still waiting on the guy to look over the motor with me) both tires replaced and replacements for my other trailer as well. $22.50 with coupon each at HF.

4VbWrmSl.jpg

Also got lights for the trailer. These were $40 paid $30 with another 25% off coupon. submersible and LED. they are dim right now for some reason. I suspect a bad ground but ran out of daylight. I will run a dedicated ground.

AY1PzZtl.jpg

The nice thing is all these trips for single purchases to HF to use a coupon each time (no I don't drive back and forth I park out their and go in every couple hours so I don't burn gas. I went and saw 2 movies ($5 each :) Machete Kills was simply amazing. lots of ridiculous gratuitous killing :) and cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 was quite good too.

anyway all these trips also let me use my "freebie" coupons. I have a pretty nice stack of freebies (and this is not all of it)

e6cRaIml.jpg

sadly the "radio" I saw under the dash proved not to be a VHF radio but a junky car stereo. this will go away once I get in their :) already eying a pyle 4 speaker bluetooth setup (no wires so waterproofing is not compromise) will link up with my waterproof tablet I will mount on the dash as my chart plotter. $119 is tough to beat. Just got to save up some cash for it.

Ordered a nice lighted (LED of course) compass for $9. hard to argue with that.

sadly a bimini top is going to be "fun" to get for this. its 59" wide. Most that I find are 72" or 84" and while cutting down the center of the polls would be easy modding the fabric is not so easy. I think I might be better off just making my own.

Something you guys might be able to help me with.

First is there anyway to look up any history on this boat.? not "this one" specifically but this model in general. ie 1971 larsons.

also what in the world went here

RAVhbkZl.jpg

notice the 8 (6 very visible) holes as if something was "mounted" in the middle here.

what went their?

Hi nerys,
Welcome to the Iboats dry dock...
I would like to come aboard and be part of the peanut gallery and cheer, learn and help if I can...
Well, even though you weren't planning on restoring a boat, you got a nice looking one in lieu of payment for a debt...
Should be a nice looker when you get it all done up...
I like Orange, too...especially if you go with some Black accents...:)
Hopefully you get your motor issues worked out...
If you want to learn on the fast track, get a good Factory manual, if available, for your engine...if it isn't, try and get a Seloc manual for it...
Read through some of it and post up a ton of questions in the Johnson Engine section of the forum...the super knowledgeable guys there will have you turning wrenches on it in no time...
Nice score on the new goodies for the boat...
Best of Luck and Have Fun!

Since no one else has mentioned it, I guess I will.

By the wording of your title it seems that you don't realize your boat is more than likely rotten due to age and exposure to the elements and should be investigated for a complete restoration... new deck, stringers, and transom. To about the tune of $1500 or more in materials alone.

If you try to operate your boat in it's current state the odds are more than likely you'll end up like this gentleman did in a boat that's 2 yrs. younger than yours:
http://forums.iboats.com/boat-resto...ir/16-fiberglass-tri-hull-rebuild-624747.html

Just a heads up in case you didn't realize what you have on your hands.

Re: New project boat. God I hope its not a money pit cause its really nice :)

Thanks jignrub. First thing I did was investigate the floor and transom before I would even consider the deal. no rot on either. in fact it appears it "DID" have a rotten floor and one of the PO's straight up removed it all together and fiberglassed the whole thing. It appears to be very strong now. no flex at all when standing on the floor. (although "I" have not stood on it yet) I mention that because I am quite a bit heavier than your average joe.

either way the hull is pretty worthless by itself. its the motor that's worth anything. Hulls are plentiful :)

it appears I have a Saber 1500 (brochure) Thank you chriscraft254. I don't see anything their in the brochure so it must be PO added (and removed)

How do I go about replacing bits of the windscreen?

vQGXYm8l.jpg

I want to replace those side sections with taller ones (keep roughly the same angle) The rear support is easy enough. Just aluminum stock. What I need is the side supports. how would I go about getting longer versions of those?

Got a seat tonight. also scored some blue outdoor carpet !! yeah! looking at another same type seat for a pair. we shall see. Have not gotten around to trying my hand at the starter yet (no time) I will get around to it.

I also agree that you should investigate how sound the transom is before sinking some cash into her.
But I do like your story! And I will be following along. Nothing passes the time like a good project and a long winter.

I really like the boat man. Not sure why, but I think the windshield is dang slick. Im looking forward to seeing what you find once you start digging. This is the right place to share and ask. Good luck!

Re: New project boat. God I hope its not a money pit cause its really nice :)

transom and floor are solid. no water logging or rotting that I can find (I did drill the transom. dry)

so far I have not purchased anything (except the starter) that I can not use in another boat. I don't intend to break that rule till I hear that motor run :)

hey my compass came in too. NICE for $12 LED backlit :)

and this is the chair I got (with pedestal)

I am looking at getting another identical chair later this week (my other boat needs new seats too so if this boat don't work out I just put them in that one)

What did you do to "Investigate> the Floor and the Transom? Did you drill into the inside of the transom and take core samples? Did you cut a hole in the deck/floor to gain access to the Stringers/Bulkheads to take core samples of them? Do you know if there's flotation foam under the deck? Without the core samples there's no "For Sure" way to know if that boat is Sound. Stomping around on the inside is NOT reliable.

Re: New project boat. God I hope its not a money pit cause its really nice :)

correct. I drilled a hole into the floor in a few of places to check for water damage and I drilled 2 holes through the transom to check that. Bone dry. no rot. solid wood.

The stomping was before I even decided to take it (I could not drill into it till it belonged to me :) hehe

Very little foam (maybe 2 inches?) and only toward the center - looks like a lot of the original floor was removed and the floor lowered and fiber-glassed. No water logging or rot in drill samples at all. sloppy but well sealed.

in fact it creates a conundrum. not entirely sure "how" I will attach the seats. I certainly don't want to drill through the floor and end up going right through the outer hull. I am working on that. As of right now I am figuring on gluing a "base" down onto the existing floor and screwing the seat "into that" I will router the edges of the wood so its a smoother transition. then I can carpet over this and "screw" the seat right through the carpet into the base.

once I pre drill the holes I will fill the holes with epoxy resin and then use anti seize on the screws and screw them in (so I can remove them later if needed) I plan to test this first to make sure the anti seize will keep the epoxy off the screws and make sure I can in fact remove them later :)

I lacked the ability to take a "core sample" btw so what I did was use a very large dill bit (1" on the floor 1/2" on the transom) so I could actual "see" what was inside clearly without much effort. I then ripped it up a bit with screw driver so I could pull bits out and see if anything was soft rotten or had any water in it.
