Re: New Prop advise wanted

Walleyhed, and Link, thanks for the comments. Well this 16" S.S. prop, ain't going to do. I still can NOT turn over 4600 RPM's. The difference in speed from the 17" S.S. to the 16" S.S. may be 1 mile an hour. Now it was cooler today, and raining. Full of gas, as with the 17", no difference. The 17" handles low end better, and I think gave a smoother ride. I think it might handle fighting a head wind better also. Turned around wind at my back, no difference. Let the rain pass, burned gas, got down to not having but about 10 gallons on board. Tried again, No 4600. I did have a guy in a bass boat pull up behind me and wanted to know what kind of rocket I had in this Party Barge. He said that it was all he could do to catch me in my wake. After talking to him, I let him run without his passanger and clocked him at 57 MPH on my handheld Stalker Radar.

I am wondering if I may have something preset that will not allow my RPM's to go above 4600?
I just want to get the thing set up right! Anybody got any ideas, or comments? I appreciate any help in advance.

GodsBeast

Ditto on the one above me.....that power tech 16 is a very good prop but it also pulls very hard compared to other 16's.
Was the 17" a power tech?????? I think you gave a Merc P/N for that one.
I would suggest at this point, you try a 15" standard prop and see what RPM you get, and that will answer many questions, I think. :)

Re: New Prop advise wanted

Tallman, and Walleyehed, I took off the 16" Power Tech Prop today, and put back on the original Aluminum 17" Prop. The other 17" S.S. Prop I tested was a Mercury Prop. The best ride
so far on the boat was with the 17" Mercury Prop, but, even though it was super smooth, it burned some gas, and would not get into the RPM range. Now the 16" S.S. Prop, was very touchy on the trim to try to get it to smooth out, and the difference in speed was not 1 mile an hour, at any RPM range, from the 17" Mercury.

Today with the 17" Aluminum, I finally reached 4800 RPM's, but was only going 40 or 41 MPH. I went 43, with this same Prop, 35 gallons of gas, and 6 people and 2 loaded down Ice Chests before, and today only had my wife (100 lbs soaking wet) 35 gallons of gas, and me and my gear (which was also on board with the same added people before.

Tallman, I am wondering if I should try a 15" Mercury Prop? I really liked how the 17" Mercury felt. I believe that the 17 pitch Mercury had more power than the 16 pitch Power Tech.

Walleyehed, when you say 15" standard, do you mean 15" Mercury S.S. prop? Today at least I proved with the standard Aluminum 17 pitch prop, would turn 4800 RPM's now that it has been re-shaped.

Anyway, as before, I appreciate all the help so far, and appreciate any comments and or advise. I won't give up, till I know I have the right set up on this rig. Once I am set up, I will probably cruise around, trying to keep SOME gas milage, but at least know when I need to roll, I can, and I have the right set up.

Thanks again guys, GodsBeast

Re: New Prop advise wanted

Thanks again Walleyehed, but when I am going to run Aluminum, I guess I will stay with the original Aluminum 17 prop, now that I know I can get 4800 RPM's with it. As others have said, when it cools down some, the RPM should go up a little and at 4800 I am right in the middle of my RPM range.

I would really like to go with a Mercury Prop, because the ride was so smooth, but the problem with Mercury is that, my prop man said that he can't exchange them, once you buy, it is a done deal. The prop man said he was going to order a smaller Power Tech, and hopefully maybe the next one may be smoother. Maybe the last 16 PT is a
little out of balance or something.

So it is a wait till this Friday, to see what comes in, then hopefully another Wednesday run to see if it is the right S.S.

Re: New Prop advise wanted

Thanks again, Walleyehed, I didn't question him about this, I guess, because he is giving me no problems with swaping out Power Tech's. I am just guessing he may have experienced problems with returning Mercury Props in the past. The Prop dealer, did say, that at least once we fine tuned and found the right pitch prop, if the P.T. was in the right RPM's, but did not give a smoother ride, that we'd find a way to switch to a Mercury Prop in the same pitch. The guy appears to be genuine in trying to set me up with the right prop. During testing the Prop, he talked with me on my cell phone, checked some stats and ordered another prop, trying to save me a trip, and having another prop in stock when returning the one that didn't work. He seems to be leaning towards ordering a 14 pitch S.S. P.T. prop next. He will call me when it is in.

At least he is giving great service, and has been patient with explaining things to me. I would also guess that seeing how P.T. is nearer to us, that he may want to experiment with the P.T.'s instead of the Merc.'s with less returns and exchanges, considering convience. He understands I prefer the smoothness of the Merc. I tried before, but I am still open to giving the P.T.'s another chance, I am open to the possibility that the last P.T. may be just a little out of balance, or something. He even said after getting set, he'd keep an eye out for a good used Merc. prop in the right pitch, if it were to come to that. As long as he's working with me, I'll trust his reasons for going in the direction he wants to order in. Oh, just so you know the 17 pitch Mercury, was a good used one he had hanging on the wall, that we tried first, it was not ordered.

Also Walleyehed, thanks for hanging with me, through this thread, I really appreciate your concerns, opinions, and advise. As they say, I'm a babe in the woods with this, but I'm learning.

GodsBeast (Ken Bates)

Re: New Prop advise wanted

Here you go Newtoboatsman, you wanted to know about this prop experience, so I am bringing it back to the top for you.

As it stands now, the 15 Power Tech, ran 5100 RPM's the first run. Later in the day it ran 4900 RPM's Wot, then later before docking the boat, Ran 5100 RPM's again. Prop man wants to cup the 15 pitch Power Tech. I don't know if I agree, nor does the dealer, yet. Odyssey dealer, believe's I may have a fuel pressure problem, and believe's that the correct Prop in the Stainless Steel, should be the Original 17 pitch Mercury Prop I put on. Saturday I am going to put on the original 17 pitch Aluminum Prop, and try it again, after doing some of the tips the dealer told me to try. I am going to change the Prop there, and also try the 15 Power Tech Prop. because of the inconsistancy of the RPM's the Power Tech 15 gave, the dealer and the Prop guy wants to know if any of the tips, help, before pinning down, what is that Props exact RPM's, and the top speed at WOT. The boat was pretty consistant at 43 MPH with the Aluminum Prop, but it was clocked once at 45MPH, with that bent prop, and that load.
