New Prop less speed, higher rpms - Same pitch

Hello all. I have been reading thru the topics for 2 days now. This is a great forum. I few weeks ago I bought a 1999 18' Bayliner Capri with 1999 120hp Force. The first time I took it out, it ran 41 mph (GPS) very smooth and at about 5000-5200 rpms. Our 2nd outing we hit something and broke our prop. I took the broken prop to my local dealer and he ordered another one just like it. It looks the same and it is the same size pitch (19). However, I didn't pay much attention to the diameter of the old prop but I think it was 1/8" or 1/4" bigger than my new one. New Prop Size is 13" diameter 19" pitch. Aluminum 3 blade.

Problem: Now I am unable to get above 34 mph. At this speed, my rpms are 5200 and the overheat buzzer goes off. I really have to watch my rpms now because once I get to 4000 rpms, pushing the throttle the rest of the way it almost immediately goes over 5200. I have to gradually climb from 4000 to 5000.

Question: Do I need to get a little bit larger diameter prop? I use the boat for skiing and tubing. I really liked the performance and speed I had before.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I think you may have gotten a prop with a bad hub, Topkick.

Make a mark that runs from the prop onto the hub and then run her. If the mark no longer lines up, the hub is slipping.

Good luck. :)

If your hub is slipping as JB said, the dealer can fix it, may even do it for free since he just sold it to you.

Good idea. I never would have thought that a new prop would be slipping like that. I will try next weekend and let y'all know. Thanks again.
:)

Re: New Prop less speed, higher rpms - Same pitch

Finally got another brand new prop. Exact same one. The boat still runs about the same, maybe a little better. I marked the hub and prop and they are not slipping. I guess if I want to go 40mph, I need to get a 21 pitch prop. I can now get it to about 35mph. I still have to be real careful and watch my rpms so that they don't jump over 5000.

Thanks for all of your help.

topkick,
I have read the other posts keep in mind your original prop that came with the boat probably had a part number on it that identified it as a 13/19 keep in mind here in california anyway we have prop shops that modify props they could of made your 19 a 21, they could of added a triple cup to it, they could of changed the rake a little bit, but anyways if i was propping you boat and motor combonation for sea level i would start with a 21 pitch prop. good luck, bret

If you need further assistance please email me @ forcepower01@yahoo.com. thanks,Bret
