New Skeg or Skeg Gaurd ???

Ok so my buddy took my newly rebuilt Johnson 140 to the river yesterday and low and behold he hits something and rips off half of my skeg! So now do I go ahead and have a new one welded on for 150 bucks or do I get one of those fancy carbon fiber/kevlar/titanium skeg gaurds that say they can repair a damaged skeg. I run this motor on a flats boat and it sees some seriously rocky conditions here on the big bend of florida. My biggest concerns with this magic skeg gaurd are A) corrosion B) durability and C) performance loss. Any advise or experience would be greatly appreciated!

The skeguard is very durable and stainless steel...... the problem is if you hit something hard it may rip off the remaining piece it is bolted to.

I would order a replacement skeg from iboats and get it welded

Shouldn't cost $150 to get a skeg welded. Anyway, your "pal" ought to be paying!

If I were your friend, I'd want to make you whole no matter the cost. Do him a favor and pick the most expensive option so he feels good about it!

(Seriously, If it were me, I'd get a new one welded on at his expense to put it back where it was. Then I'd buy a good skeg guard for future bumps, which it sounds like are inevitable)

Absolutely he will be paying for it that has already been worked out! It does help that he has to store his boat at my house!! I guess the decision should have been easy I just needed to hear it from some fellow boat owners. The point about ripping the remaining skeg off makes alot of sense! Thanks guys!

Skeg-gaurds EDIT rattle and make noise while under power, they also have no performance features, look to the blackfin or Blackfin blade saver for a true skeg product!

I have put SkegGards on five different outboards, 2 to repair broken off skegs and the other three to prevent loss when (not if) I hit a rock.

All performed flawlessly, took rock hits without failing and greatly improved my sense of security cruising around Lake Of The Woods.

If they fit, they don't rattle, and they always protect hundreds of bux worth of prop.
