Great looking project Hook-ed, too bad its got the white leg of death, but not everyone has trouble with them. I hope your one of the lucky ones. Lots of reading for you in the resto list at the top of the Starcraft section.

I stand by my earlier comment:
Nice Islander

If you're going to tear into it for cuddy, deck, doghouse, transom & layout redo, might test the waters & see if the OMC is worth parting out to fund a driveline swap. It may not always be a good runner, then your newly redone interior, doghouse & transom work is at risk of needing to be removed (redone?) for a future transplant...

Either way, that Islander is a nice place to start...

Well rats. When you said OMC I was hoping "Cobra" vs. "Stringer" (was afraid to ask).

I'll let my actions speak for themselves regarding the Stringer drive.

Hey, she can be sweet again, for sure!

Check thru Jas Islander thread, Mercruiser V6 & it's outdrive....

I don't know, but your current motor setup may be difficult to adapt to a different outdrive only.... I unfortunately don't know enough about Mercruiser swaps, but I do know that the keyhole where the current outdrive gimbal (fairly round shaped) passes thru the transom, is the wrong shape to fit a Mercruiser outdrive gimbal housing (very much like a keyhole shape). You can see both in Jas Islander thread....

There may be more value to a buyer to sell them a running motor & operable outdrive together. Again, check the Starmada poster boy's Islander thread (It's Jas BTW...

Well, unfortunately, with that set up you have, you'll be looking for a complete driveline, engine, outdrive, controls, everything.

My opinion...

If I were in your shoes (I was/am) I wouldn't put a single penny into that OMC Stringer. I'd pull it out, sell it on eBay/craigslist, rebuild your rig with Mercruiser specs, buy a rotted out fiberglass donor boat with a good running 4 cyl 3.0 Mercruiser, and make the transplant.

Or....

Bolt an outboard on a bracket (more expensive than the first option though).

Caution, what I have just suggested is a big challenge!

You can click on the Islander link in my signature here and check out the very long version of what I just said eh:joyous:

I will have to agree with jasoutside on replacing the whole engine/outdrive. What the hey...if your going to go thru the rest of the wood and all, why put that old outdated drive back in? The good news is...those old outdated OMC units can bring a good amount of dollars if in good running order because they are not made anymore nor are replacement parts so guess how valuable your can become to someone who needs parts... AS suggested find a donor boat and salvage the engine/outdrive. A 4cyl 3.0 will be plenty of hp for your 19'. My 22' has a 3.0/140 hp and will do 34 on gps with 3 adults and fishing gear, normal cruise speed 4-5 mpg on fuel. Can't beat it !!

Wow, that is interesting! I like the idea of an OB actually. I hate how much room the doghouse takes up. If I could get my hand on a nice OB i could make a nice stainless bracket, no problem (Im a laser and waterjet operator @ a tool and die shop) it cant be that complicated to hook up the controls can it?

Hook_ed in regards to your o/b conversion, be aware the controls connection and fabrication of the o/b support are not the problem..attatching it all to the boat with enough structual integrity to support all the weight and power is the real problem.
If not done properly you may find the whole back end of your boat at the bottom of the lake. Unfortunately I have seen it happen.

Absolutely, and IMHO, Mag's pod accomplishes just that: Structural integrity, adequate support, and more then sufficiently transfers power & torque. Which is why I used it as an example.
Proceeding half-baked (@$$'d
