If it is hyrdolocked it won't turn a full revolution.

Re: New starter grinding

Why was you messing with the timing to begin with? Did you have a no start condition, or it wouldn't turn over or what?
I think bomar is possibly onto something here to get to the root of the problem, not just get the starter working.

Re: New starter grinding

Now that some one explained the hydro lock thing I this. When it turns over it sounds like its grinding on one cylinder as it goes around. It will turn over two or three times and grind once during each turnover.

As with the timing thing yes we couldn't get it to start for awhile. It kept backfiring up through the carb. I rebuilt the carb., dist., changed fuel filters, plugs, cap etc: and came down to the timing. We had it running good until the starter quit working.

All 8 pistons are constantly moving, one never stops till it turn. I don't think we understand the sound you are hearing from what you are describing.

With a hydrolock, the engine will start to turn over then stop. It can't go any further. Liquid will not compress. YOu might eventually push it past the rings and valves into the oil and the exhaust manifold, by constantly hitting the hard spot. That wil destroy starters. Along with bent rods, broken gears on the ring gear etc.

Among other things, I am not totally sold on your ability to rebuild a carb.
I have tried to follow this and the numerous other threads you have posted about the same problem and can't say any of them make any sense.
Ever consider throwing in the towel and dragging the boat to a mechanic?

No I didn't do this work myself. I know for a fact I couldn't rebuild a carb. I paid someone to do it. I have a boat mechanic that I use and he is at a loss for words. Thats why I am trying to figure out whats going on. I am probably about to take it to a different boat shop and see what they say.

If you still have the old starter count the number of teeth on it.
Compare it to the new starter. I`m pretty sure there was a 9 tooth and a 11 tooth pinion gear.

Thats what I think is its a different bendix and its not meshing up right.
Unfortuantely the old starter had burnt up brushes and I threw it away.

Re: New starter grinding

I finally got it fixed. I pulled the motor and replaced the ring gear. Arco gave me another new starter. We bolted it on and manually engaged the silonoid. You could see where it hit wrong and only plunged halfway out into the fly wheel. So I went and bought a OEM starter and its obviously different. The teeth on the bendix are spaced different and the bendix goes out a 1/4" further than on the arco starter. Put it on the motor and it works great. Took the other one back and Arco swears that its the right starter and there is something wrong with my boat. Even when I show them the difference in the two starters. They are all pricks and I will never deal with ARCO again. They suck. They cost me $500 to replace my ring gear after they gave me the wrong starter. But at least I got to the bottom of the problem. Thanks for all the advice.

Now you see why I always say "Get OEM, not aftermarket". But if you have to get aftermarket ARCO is usually better than some of the others that should be avoided at all costs.

Definetely OEM is the way to go. Now I know why.
