Several weeks ago I got prop stuck in rope. I tried to restart the engine when I think it was still in gear, before I noticed the rope. After trying to start engine after removing rope engine would not start. The engine is a Chev 305 merc model 228. The battery has 13vdc, I heard a single click when the key was turned on. I checked the voltage at the starter sel it was 12.5 VDC. I replaced the starter with no joy. I heard what I thought was a louder clunk noise from the starter. Now when the key is turned there is a continuous clicking noise. Help

Re: new starter question

Did you replace the old starter with a new one? Also , can you turn the crank over by hand? The clunk could be because the flywheel wont turn.

Re: new starter question

when the rope got stuck ,were you underway and stop suddenly?if so, you may have hydrolocked the motor .pull the plugs to check for water intrusion as soon as possable.anything over 48 hrs is uaually a bad sign of a frozen motor.

I was just leaving the dock at very low speed. If I remove the plug I should look for water ?

Re: new starter question

The continuous clicking noise is usually a dead battery or a bad connection. You prob need to check and clean all of your starter/battery connections

Re: new starter question

Well there is 13vdc on the starter and I have checked all connections, never had any trouble with starting before.

What happens if you try to jump start the motor?
