i just bought a 81 lowe 16 foot boat last night. it has a evinrude 55 2 sroke. electric star. brought it home hooked up the flush kit to the foot and the boat runs great gos in and out of gear perfect.
so i took it to the lake to day and it started right up. went out about 1/8 mile and the motor started to bogg down. backed up the leaver and it will run fine at about 1/4 throttle. anything past that and its hit and miss. sometime it will speed up and sometime it just boggs down.

so i brought it home hooked it back up to the hose pipe, it starts right up takes revs it runs perfect. can someone please tell me y it only runs good hooked up to my hose pipe.

i really would like to fix this myself. let me know what you think zac

Check spark - make sure it's running on all cylinders - could be a bad coil and it will idle ok on only one cylinder, but bog down under load.

piece of cake, zac. evaporating gasoline leaves a varnish behind in the high speed jets.

the motor has underwater exhaust, which puts a load on the engine that just isn't there when it's hooked up to the hose. It'll run just fine even with gummed up carbs -- until you put a load on it, then it's got no power.

Couple things you need to rule out before rebuilding the carbs:
Do a compression test and spark test -->

Post your results.

Make sure your fuel line holds pressure, the gas is fresh, the tank vent is open and clear, no water or debris in the gasoline, the spark plugs are correct and in good shape.

If all that checks out, rebuild the carbs. -->

What is the model number or year of your motor?

What oil are you mixing with your gasoline?

the motor is a 1977 evinrude 55 hp. as far as oil i did screw up the other day. i have a 6 gallon fuel cell, i toped it off with 3 gallons and put 3 ounces of oil in. should i drain the gas and start over.

also with the carbs i put the old needle ans seat and float back in and the motor runs fine on the muffs. fixed that problem.

i did also find that from the 2 coils ( the orange wires ) they meet to a plug -in. where there is also a black wire that goes to the main wire harness. that black wire was almost broke into and very rotten. so i replaced that. maybe that was the problem.

let me know about the gas. should i drain it or run it. thank you zac

You need a pint or 16 ounces of good quality TC-W3 oil for six gallons or approximately 50:1.

Generally you could double the oil (they do for racing and high performance) but you never want to run below 50:1. You should add some oil to the gas you have.

If you haven't done so, you might want to read through the thread about awakening a sleeping outboard that is in the Engine FAQ forum; its a good idea to follow it when taking on an unknown motor. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086

You can save yourself a lot of frustration and money by having a model-specific factory service manual. You can save money on that by buying one on Ebay; search "1977 Evinrude 55 Service Manual", or get a new one from the publisher at: http://www.outboardbooks.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=search.main

The parts diagrams and lists are on-line at the BRP site; just click the diagram at the upper right and navigate to your motor: http://shop.evinrude.com/

would the lack of oil cause the motor to loss power and bogg down.

Re: new to boats need help

It could cause the motor to bind, overheat and lose power from lack of lubrication.

What's more likely is that the float valves in the carburetors are gummed up and not keeping the bowls filled with gas for the engine to draw from.
You could also have an obstruction such as not having the vent open on the gas tank.

I like to start troubleshooting at the gas tank and work my way to the propeller - I hardly ever get halfway to the propeller before I find my problem.

BTW, you need to be sure that you have the clips on the float valve needles that connect them to the float arms. Please click the thumbnail.
