New To Forum Ted Williams 15 Questions

Hi all Im new to the forum. Ive been Lurking the last few days.

I have a question about a 15 hp ted williams Outboard im looking at to put on my lonestar.

The guy is asking 300 and says it runs great and has new plugs and oil.

I have worked on cars and atvs but dont know much about outboards. Im just wondering if these motors are reliable and if theres anything i need to look out for?

Im assuming this motor would be water cooled?

And does anybody know what year it could be or anything about the parts availability for these?

And would it be reliable enough for regular use?

Yes,it's water cooled.
Looks like an 80's motor, you would have to give a model and ser# and check with Sears.
Reliable? Maybe but it's an older outboard,who knows.You could pay 300 bucks for it and it may run for along time, or it could blow up the next time you run it.Personally, I would look for an older Johnson or Rude in that price range.Atleast you can still buy parts for them at a reasonable price.

Heres the problem If the prefix number is 217 imo absolutely not .It is an Eska Last year produced 84 Eska no longer exists.And they appear to have expensive ignition problems.If it begins 225 It is a Force production ended in the mid to late 90s.
There are parts out there but availability is somwhat restricted.
I think you are better off with a 15 Evinrude or Johnson.Check here at iboats for parts for all these motors.

Okay i havent gone too look at it yet but I think he might take 200.

Im going to check the serial numbers and hopefully its a newer one.

Im located in central texas if anybody has any ideas about where to shop for used small outboards around here that would be great, I cant find anybody that sells them besides craigslist and im striking out there

offer the guy 20$ for it. thats about what it is worth.unless this is a hobby you it will be frustrated beyond imagination.they were 700$ brand new. ss ignition is 250$ . even if it works today as soon as the ign heats up they fry.and if your coil wire is off you will fry the ign with one pull on the starter rope. if you are not very mechanically inclined these are not for you.
