I have a 04, VIP 4.3 merc alpha 0ne. After running it pretty hard pulling a tube the motor tries to keep running after I shut it off. Is this a temp related issue or am I looking in the wrong direction?
BTW, I don't think the temp gauge is working right as I never get above @ 110deg.

Thanks for the input guys. Don S, the service bullitin was very informative. I will look at all of the suggestions.
Thanks again!

You've got a couple things going on here. First verify your opperating temp, idle mixture, timing and choke opperation. As stated in the bulliten that DonS gave you the culprit is combustion chamber hot spots. If everything above was good then the two most likely causes are carbon build-up in the combustion chamber and and using gas with an octane rating that is too low. You need to be running "mid-grade" and NOT the cheap stuff. To get rid of the existing carbon build-up, I use BG44K. It is a little pricey(15-20 a bottle) and can be difficult to find, but I haven't found anything that works better.

I sure can't see carbon buildup as being a problem on a 2004 boat.
