Re: New to iboats, new project!

Yeah I figured they're for the tank... But with my old ones you could see a stringer..

Percussion isn't the best test.. I'd drill a few core samples just for safety... I'd hate to see you bust your *** on a nice interior only to find a rotten deck in 2 years...

Good idea! Thanks for the tip.

Re: New to iboats, new project!

Hey stinger,
Welcome aboard the Iboats dry dock...

Best place on the net for anything boats...

Great lookin fast boat you got there...

That is going to be one diabolical water toy...

I'll be taggin along for the ride to see how it turns out...

I will bet that since you've done a couple of resto's already, you might be teaching us a few new tricks...;)

As far as heating your little enclosure... you can get one of the electric ceramic heaters that are fairly safe in most places, no open flames to speak of, and if you tip it over, it will shut off... I really wouldn't know too much about them other than they exist...not a lot of call for heat here in south fla...:)

Best regards,
GT1M

Sam,
Great that you have picked up this hobby and already gotten some good experience at a pretty young age. This will certainly benefit you in so many ways down the road.

You may be a bit young to truly appreciate that your boat (arcade style graphics, vinyl patterns, colors, etc..) really reflects the decade of the 80s (in a good way). I have no doubt that some killer hairband metal was blasted from her stereo back in the day... Just looking at this boat makes me want to play some space invaders or watch weird science... You should name it the "Miss Molly Ringwald" -- the red-headed teen princess of 80s cinema....

There are all types of heaters available to use. Just make sure you ventilate it properly.
You have made a good start on a good looking boat. Looking forward in watching your work.

"Miss Molly Ringwald" (LOL) I remember her. Pretty in Pink. Ha Ha Ha
Don't paint her Pink (LMAO)

REALLY NICE FIND!!!

Awesome looking boat man and I am definitely going to be along on this adventure! If you haven't got the shrink wrap accessories, here is a good place to get them from that I used. Put a solar, a wind, and two passives in mine then I have a small electric heater that I turn on when I am working on the boat. I never leave it on when I am not on the boat though!

Thanks for adding the new pics Sam. It really added to the understanding of what and how much you have going on with this project. I pushed back like -wow, that's a lot of work. So . . . When I saw this motor pic I got to hoping we would see some real motor work happen at some point. Any chance you have plans for an engine overhaul or rebuild . . . er, gona give it a nice paint job . . . maybe new fan belts and spark plugs even? It's just we get used to watchin all our buddies grind their hulls and tab their stringers most days. We got a guy here that cut his boat in half and that caused some excitement. Heck, we even got one guy making up boat cartoons on the sidelines of his resto thread. All I'm saying is your doing great an keep it coming and don't spare any details.

I appreciate all that you mentioned! I love classic anything- cars, trucks, boats etc. While watching some of the Miami Vice TV episodes (I own season 1 +2 on DVD) I saw the Chris Craft Stinger 39' and the Scarab 38' KV....then I discovered this 23' Stinger in the boat yard that fit into that era perfectly! It looked like a boat that one of the bad guys would use on an episode...so I was like "gotta have this!!". Its been dream of mine to get that boat, and I guess some dreams come true! Great colors and design!

I am going to keep the paint the same...it is imron...going to patch up the dings and scratches etc and refresh the paint. The interior is going to be changed slightly, but not too much. Im staying with the tan interior and patterns in the upholstery. I am going to replace the back bench seat (and change it up only a tiny bit) and engine hatch with new wood, everything. I am going to put two drop down bolster seats in the front. The cabin is going to stay the same, but I may add a small tv screen on the storage locker wall and table in the middle.

Going to keep the all original guages and switches (if they still work) and I will change the single handle lever to an offshore racing twin stick (throttle/shifter seperate) setup.

I am going to re-build the engine (if if doesnt run) and going to fix the exhaust, so that it goes out the pipes on the back to get that sweet big-block sound.

I plan to do about 3 poker runs a summer, plus this Don Aronow around long island memorial marathon in the fall.

I plan do re-build the engine next fall when it comes ('ll be going to a college type school for boat repair)....if the engine doesnt run that is. If the engine does run, I'll keep it. And, if I get my other boat sold, I may buy bigger HP or another 454.

WOW... That is alot of work my friend. Judging by the amount of rust on that engine, it will need all new manifolds, and a bunch of other stuff. Also, make sure she is not rotten. With the neglect I see, you need to be vigilant about checking everything.

Re: New to iboats, new project!

i would not worry about a bigger motor for that boat....it looks lke a 26 ish...a 454 is perfect for it. going bigger will put you into another bracket of marine called performance. and if you thought marine was expencive......try performance marine.
click on my sig...or on friscos for great information on what to look for....

The boat is 23' in length...with the existing engine, after rebuild/fix up, I am hoping to achieve at least 70mph. This will be a poker run boat that will most likely run with the slower boats in the pack.

You live Texas Frisco, 200-250 miles from the coast line and not the temperature changes and freezing we have . Come to the north and close to the atlantic ocean you want to see rust. That is minor and alot of boats are like that. You should see under the hood of alot of vehicles up here..they look worse then that boat engine. I tried detailing my stroker and only painting part of the heads and leaving some metal natural. I only drive from june until october on dry days with it and my detailing is all rusted.Things rust just from the salt in the air. A little tlc and another can of engine black..he will be brand new looking anyhow.

Reason for edit is I forgot to say also was we look to buy used parts for our cars from texas as they are all rust free. We have a distributor that goes down every 2 weeks to buy a tractor trailer load of used stuff, gas tanks doors everythingIi guess. Mechanics up here would drool to be able to work without rust . You got it lucky down there bud.
