Just brought home a Hewescraft with a Model 90ELPTO(2001) Mercury outboard. It has not been run in at least a year. I have no manual but am itching to test run it here b/4 going to the river.
The fuel had Stabil added and I can add 2 cycle oil. I'm embarassed to say even with the latch released on the back of the engine the top won't come off-didn't want to force it. I have a water barrel and/or muffs to run in.
I found how to order manuals on line and will-don't know if if I can wait.
Looking for direction please.
Thanks in advance

Re: New To Mercury

I have the same engine but its a 2003, the cowl tilts forward and often sticks down due to the shape of the rubber seal. I would tilt the motor up and grab the cowl handle (after you release the latch!) and give it a good pull with both hands, its probably just stuck down. Be careful not to fall over...haha!

A little silicone grease applied to the seal stopped mine from sticking.

Thanks-popped it open-stuck on the gasket like you said. Motor sure looks good-trolling motor must have had all the hours.

Re: New To Mercury

Bob, I know you're itchin to get it going but I think safe and prudent advice is to take it in for a service. Let them know that there is Stabil in the tank and the gas is old. Also, let them know how long it sat.

Once you get this first service done, take the time to learn about the engine and the care it needs when stored so next year when you bring it out of storage you can do all the work yourself and save a lot of money.
